General Function

Under the direction of the Early Learning Center Program Director and/or Coordinator, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for meeting the developmental needs of children birth to five years of age in a group setting.

Responsibilities
  • Encourage and participate in daily activities with children in the classroom.
  • Supervise children, following posted schedule and lesson plans as directed by the classroom teacher, assist in managing child behaviors.
  • Maintain positive relationships and professional communication with children, families and coworkers.
  • Prepare activities and materials, clean classroom and equipment, and other duties assigned.
  • Minimum Entry Requirements
    • Minimum age of 18 years.
    • Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED.

    Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to follow safety requirements pertaining to young children.
  • Understanding of basic child development and appropriate childcare practices.
  • Ability to work with and follow the direction of the classroom Lead Teachers and program supervisors.
  • Effectively respond to questions from coworkers, parents, and Program Director in a timely manner.
  • Ability to work independently without direct oversight.
  • Possess the ability to be flexible.
  • Physical / Mental Requirements
  • Must be able to routinely perform physical activities such as running, jumping, climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching with hands, sitting, standing, walking, and performing moderate physical activity for extended periods; lift or move up to 50 pounds; have finger dexterity, reach and perform repetitive motions, speak, hear and have visual acuity.
  • Must possess mental alertness, problem solving and task management skills; ability to make independent and sound decisions in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Must demonstrate a high level of maturity, patience, dependability, sound judgment, and the desire to work with all ages.
  • Must exhibit initiative.
  • Must be able to relate to and work with diverse groups of people in a friendly and consistent manner.
  • Must work collaboratively as a team member as well as independently and lead by assigned goals, duties, and deadlines.
  • Must always present a neat and professional appearance.

  • Must attend New Employee Orientation and meet applicable KDHE requirements within 30 days of hire.
  • Complete Pediatric CPR/AED, Pediatric First Aid, Listen First Workshop, and KDHE Health and Safety trainings as applicable to current regulations and in accordance with Conditions of Employment.
  • Understand and abide by all policies and procedures as set forth by the association.
  • Ability to supervise participants and maintain safety standards actively and effectively.
  • Ability to handle all questions and concerns and resolve conflicts in a courteous and professional manner.

    Job Responsibilities
  • Assist the classroom teacher in implementing weekly lessons and activities.
  • Follow posted lesson plans and classroom schedule as directed by lead teacher.
  • Participate in lesson planning.
  • Record observations as directed by the lead teacher to monitor developmental progress and behavior concerns.
  • Facilitate children's learning through participation and encouragement.
  • Assist any child who needs to be fed, changed or have other needs addressed.
  • Program Operations
  • Effectively communicate the mission, vision, and values of the Wichita YMCA.
  • Develop and maintain positive, open relationships with families and coworkers, including successes and positive behaviors, as well as challenges.
  • Greet parents by name upon arrival.
