Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Applicants must meet specific individual eligibility requirements in accordance with VHA policy and submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Approval — award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after a complete review of the EDRP application.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
BasicRequirements
- United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of medicine (MD) or equivalent degree from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs in the year the course of study was completed.
- Current full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. state, territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training completed in a specialty approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs that leads to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include ACGME or AOA accredited programs, or non‑U.S. residencies followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Physician resident providers (PRPs) may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis if fully licensed. PRPs are not independent practitioners and have restricted duties under supervision.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Emergency Room (ER) board‑certified physicians with ER chief experience.
- Light lifting under 15 pounds; moderate lifting 15‑44 pounds; pushing, reaching above shoulders, walking for at least 1 hour, standing for at least two hours; repeated bending; use of hands, fingers, and rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near‑vision (correctable 12–16 to 4–1, 4–0) and hearing aid permitted; depth perception.
The duties and responsibilities of the Emergency Care Service Chief include – but are not limited to – the following items:
- Recruit, retain, and maintain well-qualified Emergency Department providers, mid‑level providers, and occupational health physicians.
- Ensure adequate coverage, serve as liaison with hospital administration and medical staff, and manage Employee Health and Occupational Health mid‑level providers.
- Demonstrate leadership skills and a high degree of personal and professional skills; interpersonal relations, critical thinking, problem solving, and conflict resolution.
- Serve as primary manager and supervisor of the Emergency Department and Employee Health/Occupational Health units.
- Strategically manage the service – including personnel management, resource requests, and development of the annual strategic plan.

8:00 am – 4:30 pm Monday–Friday (may vary based on staffing needs). - Financial Disclosure Report:
