Hospitalist – SOM Wichita Internal Medicine (IM)

Job Description

Summary:

This position involves inpatient teaching, supervision and assessment of resident physicians and medical students in our community hospital care systems. The successful candidate is expected to become actively involved in resident physician quality improvement projects. The position requires night and weekend call coverage for the teaching services.

Responsibilities
  • Provide patient care on the inpatient services at our community hospitals.
  • Act as supervising attending physician, according to schedule developed in consultation with Directors of Internal Medicine Education (DIMEs) and the Department Chair, accepting responsibilities for the care of patients admitted to the teaching service and available to discuss consults/referrals with the resident physicians assigned to the teaching service.
  • Assist in coordination and development of outpatient-based service of departing inpatients.
  • Ensure that chart documentation, including electronic medical records, on patients under his/her care is accurately completed in a timely manner.
  • Maintain standards to meet Maintenance of Certification (MOC) requirements in Internal Medicine and appropriate CME credit for licensure in the State of Kansas.
  • Maintain supervisory skills to promote exceptional and quality care on inpatient teaching services.
  • Monitor and evaluate patient care activities of medical students and resident physicians, providing timely verbal and written feedback.
  • Regularly attend, participate in, and lead scheduled teaching conferences for resident physicians at our community hospital(s) and at the University of Kansas School of Medicine - Wichita.
  • Communicate with the residency program director and student clerkship director regarding performance issues or program policy issues.
  • Develop and deliver seminars for resident physicians and medical students, including board review and subject examinations as needed.
  • Actively participate in standardized patient programs, clerkship oral examinations, the clinical skills program and similar activities with medical students, as needed.
  • Regularly attend and participate in residency/department conferences as required by the program director or department chair.
  • Engage in scholarly activity and provide written documentation; assist at least two residents annually in the development and completion of a scholarly activity.
  • Develop and maintain skills in modern information systems required for competent patient care; stay current on advances in general internal medicine and inpatient care.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and development programs; contribute to teaching effectiveness.
  • Serve on department, university and/or hospital committees as needed.
  • Develop a personal professional growth plan with the chair.
Required Qualifications
  • Education:

    MD or DO degree or foreign degree equivalent.
  • Certifications/Licenses:
    Board certified or eligible for certification in internal medicine; eligible for licensure in Kansas.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Work Experience:

    Teaching and supervision of medical students and resident physicians in general internal medicine; experience in internal medicine and/or hospitalist medicine.
