Overview

The Deputy Chief of Staff (DCS) is responsible for overseeing the Clinical Service Departments in the hospital and acting as the lead physician during the absence of the Chief of Staff. The DCS works with clinical service chiefs and related staff to improve processes, meet performance measure goals, and improve utilization management.

Qualifications
  • United States Citizenship – Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) or equivalent – Obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs.
  • Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery – In any State, Territory, Commonwealth, or the District of Columbia.
  • Residency Training – Approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Physician Resident Providers (PRPs) – Eligible physicians currently in ACGME or AOA accredited residency programs and fully licensed may be appointed on an intermittent or fee‑basis.

Physical Requirements – Light lifting under 15 pounds, light carrying, pulling hand over hand for 1 hour 30 minutes, pushing 1 hour, reaching above shoulders, use of fingers, walking 6 hours, standing 8 hours, repeated bending 4 hours, use of hands and fingers, rapid mental and muscular coordination, near vision correctable at 12" to 16", hearing (aid permitted).

Responsibilities
  • Serve as the lead physician during the absence of the Chief of Staff.
  • Work with clinical service chiefs and performance measure champions to improve processes and meet performance measure goals.
  • Review contract requests and help determine the best way to obtain required resources.
  • Coordinate transfers into and out of the Robert J. Dole VAMC with service chiefs, residents, transfer coordinators, and other facilities as needed.
  • Supervise staff aligned under the Chief of Staff Office and serve on a broad spectrum of medical center committees, task forces, and other activities.
  • Allocate 40% administrative and 60% clinical time in the discipline of the incumbent's board certification.
