Position: Safety Specialist I

Hutton is looking for a passionate and experienced Safety Specialist to champion safety on large-scale projects across the Midwest. In this role, you’ll be the driving force behind creating a culture where safety is more than a requirement, it’s a shared value. You’ll partner with project teams and trade partners to proactively identify and eliminate hazards, ensure compliance with OSHA and company standards, and inspire continuous improvement in every aspect of our work.

Responsibilities
  • Safety Leadership & Culture
    • Partner with project leadership and trade partners to integrate safety into daily operations.
    • Enforce safety policies and reduce hazards through coaching, accountability, and consistent application of disciplinary measures.
    • Promote substance abuse prevention and accurate reporting of injuries, illnesses, and near misses.
  • Inspections & Compliance
    • Conduct and document safety inspections at least twice per month.
    • Ensure proper use of protective equipment, availability of first aid supplies, and maintenance of required postings.
    • Maintain OSHA logs and coordinate compliance reports as required.
    • Investigate all incidents, review accident reports, and implement corrective actions with project teams.
    • Monitor site conditions to proactively identify and mitigate risks.
  • Training & Communication
    • Facilitate weekly Safety Toolbox Talks and project safety meetings.
    • Maintain and submit all safety-related documentation to the Corporate Safety Department.
Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Management or related field required; equivalent experience and certifications considered in lieu of education.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing safety programs on large-scale construction projects required.
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
  • Proven ability to manage orientations, conduct investigations, and oversee safety initiatives.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective collaboration with owners, management, trades, and trade partners.
Preferred Certifications
  • Federal OSHA Professional Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety (OHS)
  • CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician)
  • STSC (Safety Trained Supervisor – Construction)
  • CSP (Certified Safety Professional)
Work and

Physical Requirements
  • Flexibility to travel to project sites across the Midwest for extended periods of time to oversee assigned projects to completion.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, including indoor and outdoor settings, sometimes in varying weather conditions.
  • Capacity to occasionally lift, carry, or move materials or equipment up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort with walking, standing, or climbing for extended periods of time during site visits.
  • Flexibility to adjust work hours, which may occasionally include evenings or weekends to meet project deadlines.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
