Position Overview

The Fire Protection Extinguisher Apprentice supports the inspection, servicing, installation, and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers and related life‑safety equipment in commercial and industrial settings. This role provides hands‑on training under the supervision of licensed technicians while ensuring compliance with applicable safety standards, codes, and company procedures.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Extinguisher Servicing Support:
    Assist licensed technicians with the inspection, servicing, recharging, tagging, and installation of portable fire extinguishers in accordance with NFPA standards and applicable state and local codes.
  • Equipment Handling:
    Safely transport, stage, and handle fire extinguishers, cabinets, signage, and service tools required for daily field operations.
  • Documentation & Tagging:
    Complete inspection tags, service records, and daily logs accurately and in a timely manner under technician supervision.
  • Site Preparation:
    Prepare work areas at customer sites, including accessing extinguisher locations, cabinets, and storage areas to ensure efficient servicing.
  • Safety Compliance:
    Follow all company safety policies, OSHA requirements, and fire protection regulations while performing job duties.
  • Customer Interaction:
    Communicate professionally with customers on‑site, relaying basic service information and directing technical questions to supervising technicians.
  • Training & Skill Development:
    Participate in on‑the‑job training, required coursework, and certification preparation related to fire extinguisher servicing.
  • Vehicle & Tool Maintenance:
    Assist with maintaining service vehicles, tools, and inventory in clean, organized, and working condition.
  • Scheduling Support:
    Coordinate with supervisors and dispatch to ensure assigned service calls are completed as scheduled.
  • General Support:
    Perform additional fire protection‑related duties as assigned to support departmental operations.

Qualifications
  • Experience:

    No prior fire protection experience required; mechanical aptitude preferred.
  • Education:

    High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Licenses: A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required.
  • Certifications:

    Ability to obtain required fire extinguisher certifications preferred.
  • Communication:
    Excellent verbal and written communication skills with ability to interact professionally with customers, inspectors, and contractors.
Working Conditions
  • Hours:

    Monday through Friday 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM with overtime or adjusted schedules based on workload.
  • Environment:
    Primarily field‑based with regular work performed at customer sites, including commercial, industrial, and residential properties. Work environments may include indoor mechanical spaces, warehouses, and outdoor locations with exposure to varying weather conditions.
  • Physical Demands:
    Requires frequent standing, walking, bending, and lifting while performing extinguisher inspections, servicing, and installations. May involve carrying fire extinguishers and equipment, climbing ladders, accessing cabinets or wall‑mounted units, and working in confined or elevated areas. Exposure to temperature extremes, dust, and moderate noise levels may occur.
  • Travel:
    Local travel required; occasional overnight travel may be necessary.
