Brief

Job Description

Performs highly complex vocational nursing work in the care, treatment, and general welfare of individuals residing at the State Hospital with complex mental health, behavioral, and medical diagnoses. Provides instruction and on-the-job training to LVNs and direct care staff, and collaborates with RNs and other medical staff to implement protocols and programs to improve health and safety.

Responsibilities (Essential Job Functions)
  • Administer medications and treatments; assist other medical staff in examining and caring for patients; perform rounds and work at multiple locations as needed.
  • Train and instruct new LVN staff; support implementation of care protocols and programs.
  • Support on-the-job training of LVNs and direct care staff; assist with disaster response, COOP activation, and alternate shift patterns as required.
  • Ensure timely documentation in medical records; monitor patients and report symptoms to RN/Primary Care Provider.
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaboration and communicate relevant information to the team.
  • Act as a resource/mentor for new LVNs; assist with infection control and quality assurance activities.
  • Maintain supplies and equipment; participate in safety and infection control procedures.
  • Respond to emergencies and support safe operations of the unit.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

(KSAs)
  • Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and patient care principles.
  • Knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment (e.g., CPR); ability to respond effectively in emergencies.
  • Reasoning skills to identify problems and determine appropriate resolutions.
  • Proficiency with computers and electronic health record systems.
  • Ability to provide patient care to individuals with complex medical, mental health, and behavioral health needs;
  • Effective communication and ability to instruct others; adaptable to interactions with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Current CPR certification; physical ability to perform CPR and related duties.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements or Certifications
  • Licensed to practice as a Licensed Vocational Nurse in Texas or in a state that recognizes reciprocity via the Nurse Licensure Compact.
  • If transporting patients, must have a valid Texas driver's license or obtain within 90 days; provide driving record if required.
Initial Screening Criteria
  • Graduation from an LVN program.
  • Minimum six months of LVN employment experience required; twelve months preferred.
  • Six months of experience working or volunteering with persons with mental illness preferred.
Additional Information
  • Applicants must pass fingerprint background check, pre-employment drug screen, and registry checks (CANRS, Nurse Aide, Medication Aide, Employee Misconduct, LEIE).
  • Male applicants aged 18-25 must be registered with Selective Service.
  • All applicants must be at least 18;
    Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21.
  • Flexibility in work hours; overtime and/or extended hours may be required.
  • Immunization policy compliance is required; vaccination or masking measures may apply.
