- Perform highly complex vocational nursing work for individuals in the State Hospital with complex mental health, behavioral, and medical diagnoses.
- Administer medications and treatments orally, rectally, internally, or by injection and monitor individuals’ health status after medication administration.
- Collect specimens for laboratory work, perform health screenings, and conduct appropriate testing as requested.
- Assist registered nurses (RNs) in implementing protocols, procedures, and programs to improve overall health and safety.
- Train and instruct psychiatric nursing assistants and other staff on providing care that supports patients’ needs.
- Perform complex technical nursing procedures such as wound care and breathing treatments in accordance with facility and state regulations.
- Maintain accurate documentation and reports in the electronic health record or paper chart following hospital procedures.
- Communicate pertinent information orally and in writing to interdisciplinary team members to support patient care decisions.
- Serve as a resource and mentor for new LVNs and assist the RN supervisor with on‑job instruction.
- Assist in infection control, quality assurance, and therapeutic nursing program implementation.
- Ensure supplies are available, take inventory, and order supplies when needed.
- Respond to emergency situations, including CPR, following safety and infection control procedures.
- Participate in disaster response, recovery, or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation when required, which may involve alternate shift patterns and/or locations.
- Graduation from an LVN program.
- Minimum six months of employment experience as an LVN; twelve months preferred.
- Six months of experience working or volunteering directly with persons with mental illness preferred.
- Knowledge of nursing care standards, procedures, and principles for providing appropriate patient care.
- Knowledge of emergency procedures and equipment, including CPR, and ability to assess and care for residents in emergencies.
- Skill in using reasoning to identify problems and considering appropriate resolutions.
- Skill in operating computers and applicable software.
- Ability to provide patient care to individuals with complex medical, mental health, and behavioral issues.
- Ability to prepare and maintain records and to use an electronic health record system once trained.
- Ability to communicate effectively and instruct others.
- Ability to interact appropriately with individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities, their families, and staff.
- Current CPR certification; must have the strength and flexibility to perform CPR and TIPS.
- Licensed to practice as a licensed vocational nurse in the state of Texas or a state recognized through the Nurse Licensure Compact.
- Valid Texas driver license required if transporting patients (or obtain within 90 days of hire).
Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the Client Abuse/Neglect Reporting System (CANRS), Nurse Aid, Medication Aide and Employee Misconduct, and LEIE. Males 18‑25 must register with Selective Service.
All applicants must be at least 18 years of age. Waco Center for Youth applicants must be 21 years of age.
Compliance with HHSC immunization policy and state hospital operating procedures related to immunizations is required.
