Job Description

This role supports specialized care for Texans in need, working at one of the nine psychiatric hospitals accredited by The Joint Commission. The Psychiatric Nursing Assistant I (PNA I) performs entry‑level to routine rehabilitative patient services under the clinical supervision of a licensed nurse in an inpatient setting.

Responsibilities include emergency, health, and personal care, therapeutic interaction, observation, documentation in an electronic record, and participation in individualized and unit‑based programming. The PNA I promotes living and social skills to encourage progress toward a less restrictive environment and is a core member of the recovery or admissions team. Additional duties may include disaster response or continuity of operations activities.

Job Functions
  • Attends work on a regular basis and may be asked to work a specific shift schedule, rotating schedule, extended shift, and/or overtime.
  • Takes an active role in implementing individualized recovery plans and offers consistent support to help patients reach their goals.
  • Communicates effectively with team members to promote a positive workplace.
  • Serves as a participant in the recovery or admissions team, providing ongoing verbal and written communication concerning patients.
  • Uses basic computer, documentation, and reporting skills to communicate patient care information clearly and concisely.
  • Assists the licensed nurse in monitoring patients for medication administration or treatment, taking and monitoring vital signs.
  • Promotes safety through continuous environmental awareness and positive engagement of patients to minimize unsafe situations.
  • Promotes classes and programs offered, encourages patient participation, and may co‑facilitate groups.
  • Responds in crisis or psychiatric emergency situations using the least restrictive intervention necessary by applying TIPS under RN supervision.
  • Performs CPR, Heimlich techniques, and uses an AED correctly and safely.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including disaster response or continuity of operations tasks, which may require alternate shift patterns or locations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of patient care techniques and treatment, therapy, developmental, and patient‑centered recovery programs.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills.
  • Ability to read, write, and understand English to effectively communicate and carry out instructions.
  • Ability to provide patient care, administer first aid and CPR, and conduct TIPS.
  • Ability to work with others and accept supervision.
Registrations, Licensure Requirements, or Certifications
  • If transporting patients, must possess a valid Texas driver license or obtain it within 90 days of hire, and provide an original certified driving record from the state of licensure.
  • CPR certification or the ability to obtain certification within the first 60 days of employment.
Initial Screening Criteria

Six (6) months’ direct care work experience. Six months of direct care experience is preferred.

Additional Information

Applicants must pass a fingerprint criminal background check, pre‑employment drug screen, and registry checks including the client abuse/neglect reporting system (CANRS), nurse aid, medication aide, and employee misconduct, and list of excluded individuals/entities (LEIE). All applicants must be at least 18 years of age to be considered for employment at a state‑operated facility;
