Responsibilities
  • Plan, manage, and coordinate patient evaluations and physical therapy treatment.
  • Evaluate patients referred using specialized testing procedures and skills, incorporating data from the medical record to assess the patient's range of motion, muscle strength, neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, skin, coordination, gait, functional, cognitive status, pain, and rehabilitation potential.
  • Correlate evaluation data to determine an individualized plan of care to maximize rehabilitation potential.
  • Manage the plan of care through:
    • Consultation with the referring physician, other team members, and outside agencies.
    • Administration of treatments as indicated.
    • Delegation of routine care to supportive personnel according to their experience and expertise.
    • Maintaining responsibility for the patient and treatment program at all times by regularly overseeing the performance of supportive personnel.
    • Recording therapeutic techniques implemented and patient response progress.
    • Modifying the plan of care in consultation with the physician as indicated.
  • Incorporate discharge planning into treatment planning from the day of admission:
    • Educate patient, family, and staff.
    • Evaluate the patient's equipment needs.
    • Coordinate with team members.
    • Design an individualized home program.
  • Complete all required documentation, including initial evaluations, progress summaries, patient care plans, M.D.S. forms, patient screenings, and case management forms.
  • Assist with orientation and training of staff, including temporary personnel, new physical therapy staff, hospital personnel, and student interns.
  • Comply with hospital and departmental policies and procedures to meet department, program, and hospital goals.
  • Comply with established departmental productivity standards.
  • Plan, organize, and control time effectively for self and assigned supportive personnel to fulfill direct patient care, documentation, record keeping, and other job requirements.
  • Participate in departmental CQI program and serve on program and hospital committees as requested.
  • Coordinate work and services between disciplines and assist in resolution of inter‑disciplinary problems.
  • Participate in multi‑disciplinary patient care rounds as assigned.
  • Demonstrate flexibility with requests for time off, considering departmental needs.
  • Consistently arrive to work on time, not exceed sick time allowance, and complete time cards according to policy.
  • Uphold the APTA Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice, and California statutes pertaining to physical therapy.
  • Perform ethically at all times and maintain an acceptable standard of care.
  • Operate within the institution’s philosophy and organizational structure, adhering to standards governing the profession.
  • Assume responsibility for continued professional growth:
    • Independently keep up‑to‑date with trends and developments in physical therapy practice, procedures, and techniques.
    • Make recommendations for implementation of improved or new practices and procedures.
    • Present in service training to department staff as requested.
  • Comply with all safety and infection control standards.
  • Complete assignments independently within the established time frame.
  • Utilize department equipment, supplies, and resources in a conscientious and cost‑effective manner.
  • Participate in achieving departmental objectives.
  • Maintain cleanliness of the immediate work area and share in maintaining orderliness of the department.
  • Show concern and report equipment malfunction and general maintenance needs.
  • Communicate effectively with all appropriate individuals regarding patients, staff, and personal issues.
  • Complete all required written documentation in a thorough, neat and timely manner.
  • Communicate regularly with supportive personnel about patient problems, goals, and status changes.
  • Keep supervisor informed about personal concerns that may affect job performance.
  • Use appropriate channels of communication.
Qualifications
  • Minimum education:

    Graduate of a Physical Therapy Program approved by the Commission on Accreditation in Education of the American Physical Therapy Association and the Physical Therapy Examining Committee of the Board of Medical Quality Assurance of the State of California.
  • Masters (MS), MA, or MPH degree desirable.
  • Minimum experience:

    No experience required.
  • Required certification/registration:
    Licensed as a Physical Therapist in California, or eligible to take the examination for licensure in the State of California.
  • Must maintain current California Physical Therapy license.
  • Must maintain current BLS certification.
