Summary
We are seeking a highly motivated Co‑op student to join our engineering team at our underground mining operations at Keno Hill. This is an exciting opportunity for a student to develop their technical and problem‑solving skills in a real‑world, hands‑on setting. Reporting to the Chief Planning Engineer, under the mentorship of senior and junior engineers, you will support the design, implementation, and optimization of Keno Hill’s mining systems and operations, all while gaining valuable experience in the underground mining industry.

The Keno Hill mine, located within the Keno Hill Silver District in Canada’s Yukon Territory, is one of the highest‑grade silver districts in the world. Situated 350 kilometres north of Whitehorse, it lies within the traditional territory of the First Nation of Na‑Cho Nyak Dun. The mine covers 242 square kilometres and includes numerous mineral deposits and more than 35 historical past‑producing mine sites.
Keno Hill is expected to produce ~3.0 million ounces of silver in 2026. The mine is owned and operated by Hecla Mining Company, headquartered in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Established in 1891, Hecla has a rich history as a distinguished precious metals producer and has won numerous safety and environmental awards.
- Assist with the planning, design, and implementation of underground mining projects, including ventilation, ground support, haulage systems, and mining methods.
- Support daily mining operations with engineering expertise, ensuring compliance with safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
- Contribute to the preparation of engineering reports, design documentation, and technical presentations.
- Analyze operational data to identify opportunities for efficiency improvements and process optimizations.
- Participate in site visits, inspections, and surveys to ensure alignment with engineering designs and specifications.
- Collaborate with cross‑functional teams, including geotechnical, electrical, and mechanical engineers, to address technical challenges and optimize systems.
- Assist in troubleshooting and maintenance of engineering systems, proposing corrective actions where needed.
- Participate in safety audits, risk assessments, and hazard mitigation initiatives.
- Engage in continuous learning, training, and development opportunities to build technical expertise in underground mining engineering practices.

- Student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Mine Engineering.
- Strong academic background in mining engineering principles, with particular focus on underground mining operations.
- Proficiency in computer software and applications, including mining‑specific programs.
- Excellent attention to detail and strong analytical skills.
- Above average knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Collaborative team player that works well in multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to understand and demonstrate safe work practices.
- Pre‑Employment Testing (drug & alcohol, blood lead, and audiogram).
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Clean Driver’s Abstract.
