Patient Care Technician – PCT at Fresenius Medical Care

Purpose and Scope

Functions as part of the dialysis health‑care team, providing safe and effective dialysis therapy for patients under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. Responsible for the setup and operation of hemodialysis machines, maintaining a clean environment, and supporting the organization's Quality Enhancement Program (QEP) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities Patient Related Tasks
  • Assist healthcare team in providing patient‑specific education regarding adequacy measures and disease processes.
  • Welcome patients and inquire about their wellbeing.
  • Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform cannulation, and administer heparin as delegated.
  • Obtain pre‑ and post‑treatment vital signs, weights, and evaluate vascular access.
  • Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders, including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).
  • Identify and intervene in intradialytic problems as directed by physician orders.
  • Monitor patients’ response to dialysis therapy.
  • Discontinue dialysis and evaluate patient after venous access removal.
  • Obtain hemostasis and apply dressings as needed.
  • Conduct pre and post‑dialysis evaluations and record data accurately.
  • Calculate and enter patient dialysis machine programming for ultrafiltration goals.
  • Ensure safety alarms are enabled and record vital signs and treatment parameters.
  • Document patient treatment information and report significant changes to the RN or supervisor.
  • Perform safety checks, document interventions, and report unusual findings.
  • Collect prescribed laboratory specimens and clean blood spills per policy.
  • Organize supplies efficiently and monitor patients undergoing self‑care under RN supervision.
Staff Related
  • Assist in training direct‑care staff on dialysis programs under nurse supervision.
Education and Communication
  • Follow all organizational policies, procedures, and ethical business practices.
  • Maintain environmental integrity and cleanliness.
  • Disinfect dialysis equipment between treatments.
  • Prepare dialysis treatments and perform pretreatment machine alarm testing.
  • Initiate Solution Delivery System (SDS).
Record Keeping
  • Complete CQI activities and enter treatment data accurately and timely.
  • Review treatment sheets for completeness and ensure necessary signatures.
  • Prepare initial patient charts and handle laboratory requisitions.
  • Label, prepare, store, and collect lab samples per specifications.
  • Coordinate lab specimen collection with couriers.
Infection Control
  • Assist with infection control audits and support adherence to practices.
  • Reinforce infection control education with patients and families under direction of charge manager.
Transitional Care Unit
  • Follow newly admitted patients through first four weeks of dialysis and coordinate transitional care.
  • Reinforce education and care matters within state law guidelines.
  • Coordinate with facility staff to ensure multidisciplinary scheduling.
  • Assist patients with understanding home dialysis options.
  • Perform and staff dialysis treatments in the transitional care unit.
  • Assist with treatment demonstration and transition to modality choice.
  • Help with supply ordering and inventory for the unit.
Physical Demands and Working Conditions

Requires heavy lifting, patient ambulation assistance, frequent standing, and occasional lifting of up to 40 lbs. Work environment is a clinical setting with moderate noise levels and potential exposure to infectious materials. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.

Education and Licenses
  • High School diploma or G.E.D. required.
  • Meet CMS‑approved state and/or national certification requirements.
  • Hold all appropriate state licensure, education, and training.
  • Demonstrate commitment to organizational culture, values, and customer service standards.
Experience and Required Skills
  • Previous patient care experience in a hospital or related facility preferred.
  • Complete Fresenius dialysis training program and CPR certification before continued employment.
