Position Summary
The APP will manage all aspects of perioperative care of cardiac patients in collaboration with our multidisciplinary Cardiac Services team.
Essential Functions And Responsibilities Includes The Following
- Understands and adheres to the WPH Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors.
- Must be able to perform the professional, clinical, and technical competencies of an acute care APP in the Department of Cardiac Services including daily rounding with multidisciplinary team, formulation and implementation of plan of care, invasive bedside procedures, and ACLS protocols.
- Writes orders for medications, laboratory work, and diagnostic tests. Interprets laboratory and diagnostic test results.
- Able to evaluate medical/surgical problems of Cardiac Services patients and appropriately requests consults to other specialties when indicated.
- Coordinates safe discharge/transfer of cardiac services patients.
- Provides education to patients and/or families about preventive care, medical issues and use of prescribed medical-surgical treatments and/or medications pertinent to the Cardiac Services patient's condition.
- Documents all medical evaluation, diagnoses, procedures, treatments, outcomes, education, referrals, and consultations consistent with all regulatory standards and evidenced-based standards of care. Maintains documentation compliance for appropriate coding and billing.
- Safely perform invasive bedside procedures required of the cardiac services patient.
- Coordinates safe discharge/transfer of cardiac services patients.
- If work area includes the operating room, APP must be able to:
- Perform endoscopic and open conduit harvesting.
- First assist in cardiac surgical procedures.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.
Education & Experience Requirements
- Graduation from Accredited Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner Program
- Current National Certification.
- Minimum of 2 years Cardiothoracic Surgery APP experience.
- Experience in endoscopic conduit harvesting.
- Current New York State Licensure
- Current DEA Licensure
- Current BLS and ACLS Certification
- Current Infection Control Certification
- Computer
Skills:
Basic Microsoft Office. Use Previous Epic software use preferred

- Demonstrates ability to retain composure under stress
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Any hazardous chemicals the employee may be exposed to are listed in the hospital’s SDS (Safety Data Sheet) data base and may be accessed through the hospital’s Intranet site (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy of the SDS data base can also be found at the hospital switchboard, saved on a disc.
- Constantly utilizes/operates computer to access and document information.
- Must be able to stand or long periods of time in the operating room and/or ICU.
