Overview
The Operating Room Assistant performs patient and non-patient functions under the direction of the Registered Professional Nurse. Duties include transport of patients into and from the Operating Room, assisting with positioning of patients, turnover of the OR room by bringing in and removing equipment, stocking supplies in the OR rooms, maintaining orderliness of supplies and equipment in the OR storage areas, retrieving ordered medications from pharmacy and blood from the blood bank, assisting in picking cases, reporting equipment in need of repair, performing clerical duties and other duties as assigned.

- Performs tasks listed in the job summary according to policy and procedure.
- Integrates patient’s rights into work practice.
- Utilizes current methods of infection control.
- Participates in Performance Improvement Initiatives.
- Utilizes appropriate steps in the decision making process related to patient care and unit-based issues.
- Collaborates and communicates with the health care team.
- Completes competency requirements.
- Attends mandatory in-services.
- Attends staff meetings as required or requested.
- Utilizes cost containment practices.
- Adheres to all WPHC policies and procedures including dress code, code of conduct, customer service, attendance and submission of annual physical.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
High School Diploma/Equivalency
Previous experience in hospital or with patient care preferred.
Core CompetenciesAbility to act in a professional capacity and serve as a role model. Retains composure under stress.
Communicates effectively (written and verbal) in English.
- May be exposed to chemicals necessary to perform required tasks. Hazardous chemicals are listed in the hospital’s SDS database and may be accessed via the hospital intranet (Employee Tools/SDS Access). A copy is also available at the hospital switchboard.
- Must be physically able to frequently transport heavy objects over 50 lbs and lift patients with assistance or assistive devices; perform difficult manipulative tasks and have good hand–eye coordination; walk and stand for prolonged periods.
- Must meet regulatory requirements 100% of the time.
- Must be able to concentrate on fine detail with interruptions and attend to tasks for more than 60 minutes frequently.
- Must understand theories behind related concepts and remember multiple tasks during the day.
- Must be able to detect objects at various distances and hear normal sounds with some background noise.

SalarySalary Range: $36,814.05 – $55,210.35
