Position OverviewThe Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) seeks an organized, professional and results‑oriented individual to serve as a Tax Auditor Trainee. The trainee will participate in an agency training program to build expertise in auditing employers’ books and records for compliance with the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Act. Responsibilities include classroom training, assessments, and on‑site work with employers. The ideal candidate brings an accounting, payroll, or auditing background and strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
EssentialFunctions
- Participate in the Tax Auditor Trainee program under immediate supervision for up to twelve months.
- Complete assignments using agency‑provided PC or laptop and software.
- Meet with employers and/or their legal representatives.
- Attend staff meetings, conferences, workshops, and other learning activities.
- Perform additional duties as reasonably requested.
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or an allied field.
- Ability to speak and write Spanish at a colloquial skill level.
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in accounting.
- Fifteen (15) credit hours in accounting, including at least one audit course.
- One year of experience applying accounting and auditing theories, methods, and procedures, including government regulations.
- One year of experience reviewing financial, payroll, or tax records for discrepancies.
- One year of experience working with financial software systems for tax information review.
- Basic proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
- Experience preparing and presenting comprehensive financial, accounting, or audit reports.
- Experience communicating policy and procedures to diverse audiences.
- Illinois State Police background check and self‑disclosure of criminal history.
- Fingerprint‑based background check.
- Use of Spanish in all duties.
- Travel, including overnight stays, as required; valid driver’s license and automobile.
- Light work duties (see 20 CFR 404.1567(b)).
- Attend seminars, conferences, and trainings to stay current.
- File required economic interest statements as required by Illinois law.
