Track - Assistant Coach

Description of Activity
The middle school Assistant Track Coach is responsible for coaching assigned aspects of the track program under the direction of the Head Coaches, including assisting in providing guidance, instruction and experience to enhance students' personal, physical and social growth and development. In collaboration with the Head Coaches, the assistant coach is responsible for addressing locker room behavior, practices, and performance areas and for establishing a team culture, ensuring that all athletes and team managers are treated fairly and equitably within all aspects of programming.

The responsibilities of the assistant coach described in terms of days and hours are the minimum number required to reasonably fulfill the requirements of the activity. The length of season and number of practices and contests are based upon the school calendar and formed in conjunction with the conference.

The number of assistant coaches is determined by administration based on student participation.

The following minimum time expenditures outside the school day are indicated as appropriate to the above criteria:

  • Aid in the team s development of fundamental skills and understanding of the rules of track alongside the Head Coaches.
  • Organize and direct individual and small group practice activities/exercises as directed by the Head Coach.
  • The number of contests during a session is to be determined by the conference. It is expected that either a practice or game will occur on days in which school is in session (a full student attendance day) during the season. Some contests may take place on a Saturday.
  • Assist in the planning and conducting of practices, which should be one and a half (1.5) to two (2) consecutive hours per practice session.
  • Transportation (with students to and from events).
  • Attend all track events.
  • During events, assist in monitoring student behavior of the team.
  • Along with the Head Coaches, supervise students after practices and games until students leave the building and school premises.
  • Call to the attention of the Head Coaches any serious discipline problems.
