Water/Wastewater Operator Trainee (Entry-Level)

Pay: $22.95 per hour
General SummaryUnder close supervision, the Water/Wastewater Operator Trainee assists certified operators with the daily operation and maintenance of water or wastewater treatment facilities. This role is designed to prepare the employee for entry-level state certification through hands-on training and experience.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Assist certified Water/Wastewater Operators with facility operations
- Monitor gauges, meters, and control panels
- Report operating issues and assist with corrective actions as directed
- Operate valves, gates, pumps, engines, and generators after training
- Record meter readings, gauge data, and maintain shift logs
- Perform routine maintenance, custodial duties, and basic equipment servicing
- Learn sampling procedures and assist with basic laboratory testing
- Observe system performance and report abnormalities
- Follow written and verbal instructions accurately
- Maintain punctual and reliable attendance
- Travel between work locations as required
- Participate in on-call rotation for emergency response, when required
- Perform other related duties as assigned
- Works under close supervision with continuous review of work
- Receives detailed instructions for new tasks
- Does not supervise other employees
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to work in a team environment and follow instructions
- Must obtain New Mexico Level I Water or Wastewater Certification within 18 months of assignment (based on department placement)
- Work performed at water or wastewater facilities and job sites
- Travel between work locations required
- May require on-call availability for emergencies
