Position:
Sign Language Interpreter
Reports To:
Deaf/Hard of Hearing Program Coordinator
Facilitate communication between signing and non-signing individuals within the school setting.
Qualifications- Approval by ISBE as sign language interpreter at Initial, Standard or Master Level.
- Ability to interpret/transliterate for deaf or hard of hearing students in classrooms or other mainstream situations.
- Working knowledge of the Code of Ethics of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
- Interpret or transliterate as indicated in the assigned students' individual education plan.
- Interpret or transliterate for deaf or hard of hearing students in discipline situations as requested.
- Assist diagnostic personnel in communicating with students in the D/HH Program during evaluations.
- Maintain a notebook or folder describing assignment to be available to substitute interpreters.
- Participate in workshops or training opportunities to enhance skills related to the role of a sign language interpreter.
- Adjust schedule as needed if another interpreter is absent.
- When not filling the role of interpreter, assist in classroom or provide supervision as needed.
- Interpret or transliterate during announcements, assemblies or other special events as requested.
- Interpret or transliterate as indicated in the assigned students' individual education plan.
- Interpret or transliterate for deaf or hard of hearing students in discipline situations as requested.

Terms of Employment: 10 month assignment at a pay rate established by the Board of Directors in accordance with its Agreement.
Evaluation:
Performance of this job will be evaluated at least annually in accordance with the Board of Control policy on evaluation of educational support personnel.
