HPTC Historic Stewards Wood crafting Intern

Term of positions is 12 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placements (SIP) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

For the remainder of the program, applicants hone their skills alongside NPS craftspeople at the Historic Preservation Training Center and may include work at other NPS sites requiring travel.

All work will include the use of historic tools and techniques and modern instruments, equipment, and materials to complete a robust and active work schedule.

The Wood crafting Team combines preservation carpentry with traditional woodworking to restore and replicate architectural features that include windows, doors, columns, and many other components found on and in historic structures. Projects can include window and door restoration; millwork replication and fabrication; structural repairs and timber-framing; exterior envelopes; wood, slate, and metal roofing. Examples of tasks for participants include but are not limited to: measuring and cutting boards;

simple framing or roofing work; ability to measure, cut, or install wood components of historic structures using on-site measurements, verbal directions, drawings, and specifications.

Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position; including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques. Participants must be able to stand or kneel for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.

Participants will also be required to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, heat and snow.

Minimum Requirements
  • Moderate to heavy physical effort is required for this position, including occasional lifting or handling of objects over 75lbs using proper techniques.
  • Standing or kneeling for long periods and will be required to climb ladders, work from scaffolding or platforms, work on uneven or angled surfaces such as a roof, and/or be able to work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to stoop, bend, kneel, climb and walk in all manners of environmental conditions such as rain, mud, and extreme heat or cold.
  • Personal transportation will be required to report to job site.
  • United States citizen or legal resident.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in historic preservation and/or trades preferred.
  • Open to current students of historic preservation programs, previous TTAP members, and other applicants with background education or experience in historic trades.
  • Ability to commit to a 12-week experience of combined training and hands‑on work.
  • Flexibility to work outside of traditional hours may be required.
Benefits
  • Living Allowance: $18/hr (pre-tax).
  • Monthly housing stipend may be provided to qualified applicants.
  • $500 professional development stipend.
  • Public Land Corps Hiring Authority Eligibility – must meet 640 hours of service. (only available for those 18‑30 years of age, maximum 35 years old for Veterans with valid DD‑214).
  • Direct Hire Authority Eligibility – This position is classified as a DHA (Direct Hiring Authority) Internship. DHA positions target exceptional, current undergraduate or graduate students that are interested in pursuing careers with the NPS. DHA positions will be rigorous internships that develop the participant’s technical and creative thinking abilities, leadership skills, and problem‑solving capabilities.
