The Nursing Assistant assists in patient care throughout nursing areas, and is responsible for the safe transport of patients via wheelchair or stretcher, dispatch services, and appropriate documentation of services rendered. Functions as an Observer for any patient on a patient care unit who has been assessed to require constant observation in order to maximize his/her safety. Performs general receptionist and clerical duties in order to facilitate efficient functioning of the nursing unit.

Naively notes the need to understand the patient’s condition to ensure their care and safety.

Responsibilities
  • Patient Care - Demonstrates the skills and judgment necessary to provide direct/non-direct care to patients under the direct supervision of licensed personnel.
    • Observes, obtains and reports patient data/status to assigned RN.
    • Responds to peaks in acuity and emergent situations as directed by nursing staff.
  • Professional Development - Maintains current knowledge/certification.
    • Maintains BLS certification.
    • Functions as a preceptor to new employees.
    • Displays the ability to accept and respond appropriately to feedback and recommendations for change.
    • Demonstrates professional working relationships with colleagues from all disciplines to promote a positive/encouraging workplace.
    • Accountable for being informed about changes in hospital policy and procedure.
  • Safety/Quality - Fosters a “Culture of Safety” through personal ownership and commitment to a safe environment.
    • Verifies patient identification with 2 identifiers prior to the start of any procedure.
    • Understands individual role/responsibilities in the event of hospital codes and emergency preparedness.
    • Complies with the current CDC hand hygiene guidelines through proper handwashing; adheres to universal precautions, uses PPE appropriately, and disposes of hazardous materials. Maintains awareness of MSDS sheets.
    • Demonstrates awareness of each patient’s fall risk and the appropriate use of safety devices and identified safety interventions.
    • Conducts patient safety rounds using SBAR principles; communicates identified patient or staff safety risks via chain of command.
    • Demonstrates proper body mechanics and use of patient lifts as needed.
  • Technology - Uses software applications required by department and unit standards; understands how to operate in downtime.
  • Compliance - Works within legal, regulatory and ethical practice standards; complies with applicable policies and procedures; safeguards privacy and security of patient information; brings potential compliance issues to management; complies with mandatory education requirements of compliance programs.
  • Patient and Family Centered Care - Conveys respect for values, preferences, and expressed needs of the patient and family; recognizes patients and families as important members of the health care team; collaborates with patient and family in planning, implementing, and evaluating care; welcomes family presence and participation according to patient preferences.
  • Age & Culture - Considers individual needs, demonstrates age and cultural knowledge, and interacts with sensitivity with diverse populations; utilizes resources such as interpreters as needed.
  • Qualifications
    • Minimum Education - Preferred:
      High School Diploma/GED preferred.
    • Minimum

      Work Experience:

      Previous Nursing Assistant or equivalent experience preferred.
    • Required Classes/

      Skills:

      BLS - Basic Life Support.
    • Required additional Knowledge and Abilities:
      Basic medical terminology; basic computer skills; ability to communicate effectively and document information accurately; ability to deal efficiently and effectively with a wide variety of individuals.
    • Schedule:

      7p-7:30a, rotating weekends and holidays.

    Required:

    License/Registration/Certification Requirements: ACLS (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support Certification, BLS Certification, INSTRUCTOR- ACLS, INSTRUCTOR- BLS (through American Heart Association, including courses offered through SSH).
