The Wethersfield District has an opening for a Chemistry teacher with expertise in working with students of all abilities to achieve success. The teacher will work at Wethersfield High School under the direction of the school administration and will be responsible for providing a rigorous student-centered learning environment to all students as well as overseeing the instruction, materials, and implementation of the curriculum.

Summary of Position:
Wethersfield High School has an opening for a highly-qualified educator with a strong background in Chemistry. The ideal candidate for this position is a strong team player willing to communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve with students and colleagues and plan engaging lessons that are aligned to NGSS standards and science and engineering practices (SEP's) and reflect the district priorities of Empathy, Equity, and Achievement.

In this role, the candidate will create a welcoming and active student-centered learning environment and be a collaborative participant in the curriculum development and revision process, and professional development. In addition, the candidate will have a professional responsibility for fostering positive relationships with parents and families.

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Create rigorous lesson plans aligned to the NGSS standards and science and engineering practices (SEP's) and design instructional activities consistent with the targeted learning;

* Create, organize, and utilize learning activities, such as exploration of phenomenon / labs / models / experiments, designed to enhance classroom teaching, support optimal learning, and develop new skills;

* Demonstrate facility in the skills of reading, writing, and mathematics and teaching these skills to secondary learners;

* Assist students in investigating their own questions and furthering their personal learning goals;

* Encourage student learning through peer collaboration and productive talk;

* Guide students, individually and in groups, in preparing for different types of examinations and performance-based assessments;

* Facilitate the independence of the student as learner;

* Provide on-going feedback to students through the use of formative assessments;

* Collaborate with colleagues in the development and utilization of curricula and learning assessments;

* Participate on teams to develop science curriculum aimed at improving student learning and performance that is aligned to the NGSS standards and science and engineering practices;

* Provide individualized student mentoring;

* Assist in the selection of instructional materials, equipment, and lab supplies;

* Encourage and maintain the cooperative involvement and support of parents and the community.

Qualifications:

* Master's Degree is preferred, but not required;

* A valid Connecticut teacher certificate in Grades 7-12 (031) Chemistry is required (Additional certifications in math and/or science are preferred).

* Demonstrated excellence in teaching the subject area(s) and/or instructional levels targeted;

* Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with administrators, teachers, and educational assistants;

* Evidence of organizational ability and willingness to pursue tasks to successful completion;

* Superior communication skills (oral and written);

* Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community;

* Ability to meet deadlines with established time constraints;

* Ability to handle and treat information confidentially;

* Ability to plan and organize work schedule and set priorities;

* Ability to work independently and with a sense of urgency.
