The Role

This position is responsible for drainage and masonry work, including drainage principles, trenching, shoring, and pipe installation. Candidates must provide proof of a current and valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tank endorsement, a valid Medical Examiner’s Card (MEC), and a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview.

Key Responsibilities and Expectations
  • Perform drainage, masonry, and related infrastructure work at the Westport Maintenance facility.
  • Assist with emergency duties such as snow and ice removal, with mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.
  • Stay at work for the duration of storm events, which may last several days and include holidays and weekends.
  • Maintain a 20‑mile residency requirement from the posted job location.
  • Complete a practicum evaluation as part of the interview process, conducted pursuant to DOT administrative guidelines.

Selection Plan and Application Guidance

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Three (3) years of experience in construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance, and repair of roadways, roadsides, bridges or airports, involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.

Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in the operation of complex equipment or the performance of skilled tasks. For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Transportation Maintainer 3.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of masonry and drainage work.
  • Experience with respirator fit testing and training.
  • Experience identifying utilities by color markings (CBYD).
  • Experience with drainage principles including trenching, shoring and pipe installation.
  • Experience with trench box use.
  • Experience repairing and installing concrete structures.
  • Ability to identify job starting points, orientation, grades, depths of excavation and required materials from a print and their proper placement.
Special Requirements
  • Possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications as required.
  • Willingness to accept emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever services are needed.
Characteristic Requirements
