POSITION OVERVIEW
The Assistant Superintendent provides focused leadership in the development and implementation of the school system's educational programs and exemplifies scholarship in the promotion of excellence and student achievement. Primary responsibilities include administering all aspects of the curriculum, instruction, and assessment programs; leading the curriculum leadership team; supervising, analyzing, and reporting all system-wide and state assessment programs; developing and administering the program development budget, including preparing and coordinating all state and federal grants;
and overseeing the professional development program of the Weston Professional Development Academy. The Assistant Superintendent reports to the Superintendent of Schools. ABOUT THE WESTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS
The Weston Public Schools enrolls approximately 2,000 students in pre-kindergarten through grade 12. The school district includes a high school for grades 9-12, a middle school for grades 6-8, an upper elementary school for grades 4-5, and two lower elementary schools for pre-kindergarten through grade
3. Since 1967, Weston has participated in METCO (Metropolitan Council for Educational Opportunity) - a voluntary school integration program that places Boston residents in suburban schools. The Weston METCO program enrolls approximately 160 students (K-12).
RESPONSIBILITIES Curriculum & Instruction
* Oversees all aspects of the K-12 Curriculum and Instruction Program; works with school administrators, curriculum leadership, and faculty to review, develop, revise, and evaluate data, program instruction, intervention on a regular basis; prepares plans and reports on an annual basis.
* Develops and administers the system-wide program development budget and stipends.
* Supervises the administration of all system-wide and state testing programs and submits written reports of testing results as directed by the Superintendent; analyzes and reports all state and national educational testing results.
* Coordinates the development of the Program of Studies, Grade 6 - 12, and all building-based curriculum handbooks.
* Coordinates the preparation of all federal and state grants and is directly responsible for writing grants related to curriculum and instruction.
* Conducts reviews of research on potential program changes and attends relevant conferences, workshops, presentations, and seminars; places targeted topics on Administrative Council agenda for review, discussion, and action if appropriate.
* Coordinates all program reviews (in-house and outside team reviews), reports results to the Superintendent, and implements program changes as recommended by the Superintendent and School Committee.
* Plans retreats and workshops for Leaders and Teachers, including induction programs, Elementary and Secondary meetings.
* Co-chairs the monthly meeting of the Department Heads and High School Curriculum Cabinet.
Administration
* Prepares reports for the Superintendent, as requested; attends School Committee meetings.
* Assists in system-wide, long-range planning.
* Provides support for Principals as they carry out their instructional leadership roles in their schools.
* Assists the Superintendent, other administrators, and supervises in resolving program and/or system-wide conflicts.
* Supervises and evaluates Directors of Athletics, Art, Foreign Language, Health and Physical Education, METCO, Music, and Technologies and Libraries, grades K - 12; supervises and evaluates Department Heads of English, History/Social Science, Mathematics, Science and Technology, grades 7-12; supervises and evaluates elementary school supervisor of curriculum, instruction and assessment and Reading/Writing, Mathematics, and Science/Social Studies Specialists, grades K - 5.
* Analyzes the educator evaluation system ongoing.
* Assists supervises and administration in such areas as teacher assignment and teacher evaluation when necessary.
* Serves as liaison to state grant officers and Department of Education contact personnel below Commissioner and Deputy Commissioner regarding school program issues.
* Attends conferences and meetings regarding current practices; represents the Superintendent at local and/or state meetings, as requested.
* Monitors all local and state school initiatives and requirements, and regularly reports results to the Superintendent.
* Coordinates and administers the WEEFC Administrative Grant proposal process; serves as the administrative liaison to WEEFC; attends meetings, prepares written reports, and assesses program initiatives for WEEFC, as requested.
* Coordinates all parent Home Schooling requests; prepares private school re-certification documents for School Committee approval.
