The Rivers School — a 6-12 co-ed independent day school in Weston, MA, just outside Boston — seeks professionals who are looking to join a dynamic, innovative, and welcoming school community.
As a key member of the Middle School administrative team, the Assistant Head of Middle School serves as both a thought partner and operations partner, working alongside the Head of Middle School, the Dean of Student Life, and the Middle School Administrative Assistant. Together, this team provides strategic and day-to-day leadership that ensures coherence, innovation, and excellence across the Middle School program, as well as thoughtful alignment and cohesion with the Upper School program.
This role includes:
Primary Responsibilities- Partnering with the Head of Middle School and Middle School Dean of Student Life to lead and continually evolve the middle school program, guided by the pillars of the 2025 Strategic Plan
- Providing direct, ongoing coaching, mentorship, and evaluation of teaching faculty, with an emphasis on instructional growth and reflective practice
- Serving on the Academic Leadership Team with an emphasis on refining and developing systems in the Middle School, and exploring how those systems help bridge the transition from Middle School to Upper School
- Leading initiatives related to curriculum review, revision, and development to ensure alignment with school-wide goals and best practices in middle school teaching and learning, as well as the most recent neuroscience research
- Promoting pedagogical excellence by facilitating professional development experiences, observing classes, and supporting teachers in implementing innovative, research-based instructional strategies
- Collaborating with the Academic Leadership Team and the Middle School Administrative Team to optimize the implementation of a new daily schedule
- Collaborating with the Equity and Engagement Office to consider thoughtful integration of community engagement, global education, and diversity, equity, and inclusion competencies in curriculum and classroom practices
- Collaborating closely with the student support team to promote student well-being and ensure a robust, responsive network of academic and social-emotional support
- Supporting the admissions and enrollment process, alongside the Head of Middle School and Director of Enrollment Management
- Partnering with faculty, families, and the Learning Services Office to address student academic concerns
- Helping design and lead parent/caregiver education events that reflect the school’s values and support families through the middle school years
- Communicating with parents/caregivers
- Collaborating with Middle School Administration and grade-level deans to coordinate special events, division-wide programming, and community-building experiences
- Teaching one section (aligned with the candidate’s field of expertise)
- Advising a group of middle school students
- Assuming the responsibilities of the Head of Middle School in his absence
- Minimum of 5-7 years of teaching experience
- Ideally, prior school leadership experience (e.g. department chair, dean, grade-level coordinator)
- Deep understanding of middle school learners and adolescent development
- Demonstrated experience in and passion for curriculum development and instructional leadership
- Demonstrated commitment to student wellness education and support
- Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work
- Strong communication, facilitation, and organizational skills
Salary Range: $105,000-$125,000
