Job Overview

We are looking for an exceptional individual to join our maternity teams as an advisor for Treating Tobacco Dependence. Working at Weston General Hospital, you will support the implementation of the BNSSG Treating Tobacco Dependency programme to help reduce smoking in pregnancy rates and improve health outcomes. This role is suitable for individuals currently working in a clinical or non-clinical setting.

Within This Role, You Will

  • Contribute to tackling inequalities in health by promoting and supporting pregnant service users, their significant others and families to stop smoking. Engage with people in communities and offer practical support to change behaviour to achieve their goals.
  • Provide intermediate targeted smoking cessation support throughout pregnancy and the post-natal period, using interventions such as CO monitoring and Nicotine Replacement Therapy, plus administration of smokefree pregnancy data collection and collation.
  • Work and liaise with local stop smoking services and local Public Health teams. Act as a smoke-free champion promoting the smoke-free message and develop/implement stop smoking services in health and community settings.
  • Plan and deliver stop smoking advice and support sessions, including advice on stop smoking medications, within recommended protocols. Sessions may be individual, telephonic, online or group-based in various settings.
  • Identify and approach service users eligible for tobacco dependence conversations and treatment in clinical areas, virtually, or in a person's home. Follow service users through their engagement with the service to their location of care provision for integrated care.
  • Develop individually tailored support plans including recommending treatments based on assessed needs.
  • Provide general health and lifestyle advice (e.g., healthy eating, physical activity, stress management) with signposting and referrals as needed.
  • Educate pregnant service users and families about the benefits of stopping smoking; promote smoke-free homes and advise on passive smoking.
  • Deliver CO monitoring to a high standard and engage in data collection of CO rates in pregnancy and post-partum; maintain accurate records.
  • Monitor and evaluate targeted Smoking Cessation interventions, keeping accurate records and maintaining comprehensive records at all times.
  • Ensure relevant equipment is provided and maintained on a scheduled basis. Report any equipment or environmental failings to the Clinical Lead.
  • Respond effectively to referrals within stated timescales, including self-referrals, and participate in monitoring and evaluation of patient feedback to improve services.

Quality and safety notes: be aware of how to report incidents, concerns or complaints, and escalate as required to the Clinical Lead.

Monitoring and Administrative Tasks
  • Contribute to monitoring and evaluating the service, including the minimum data set, and follow up quitters who do not attend planned sessions.
  • Maintain accurate patient and staff records in line with Trust guidelines.
  • Carry out administrative duties efficiently to meet service needs.

Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • GCSE English and Mathematics or equivalent.
  • NVQ level 3/4 or equivalent health-related studies OR substantial successful experience delivering stop smoking interventions/support.

Desirable criteria

  • Smoking cessation Advisor Intermediate level qualification (or willingness to undertake).

Experience

Essential criteria

  • Experience of providing healthcare advice or promoting healthy lifestyle advice to patients or the public.
