Position: Clinical Coordinator OR

4 days per week; 10 hours per shift

Summary

The Clinical Coordinator of the operating room will have responsibilities that include assisting in the supervision and management of the operations of the OR on a daily basis. Provide smooth and efficient patient flow within the operating room to assure quality patient care. Additionally, coordination of therapeutic, effective patient/family-centered care according to physician orders, in compliance with the philosophy of the facility, standards of practice and regulations of governing agencies is required.

Apply knowledge of the nursing process, illness, surgical procedures and anesthesia practice to the patient admissions process.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for maintaining clinical communication and personal knowledge and skills required to meet the challenge of delivering safe and effective patient care.
  • The Clinical Coordinator is responsible for assisting with daily staffing, patient/physician/employee issues in conjunction with the Director of Nursing and Administrator.
  • The Clinical Coordinator will be responsible for coordinating staffing scheduled for assigned areas based on census, coordinates lunches and breaks.
  • Collaborates with the Administrator, nursing and medical staff.
  • Collaborates with outside professional organizations, vendors and other allied health professionals as needed.
  • Serves on assigned committees.
  • Leadership Responsibilities
  • Establish and adjust staff assignments as needed to meet the needs of the center and the volume and acuity of the patients.
  • Identify needs for other staffing, using agency and request personnel as needed.
  • Verify schedules and any changes made from day to day and week to week.
  • Communicate with surgeons and anesthesiologists of any schedules as requested and/or any changes in scheduling.
  • Communicate with staff regarding their schedules and any changes as needed.
  • Maintain consistent communication with SPD, Materials manager to solve any issues that arise.
  • Assist staff on a daily basis as needed to allow breaks and lunches are granted to staff in a timely manner.
  • Maintain and update surgeon preference cards as needed
  • Troubleshoot any issues arising in the OR.
  • Demonstrate mentoring ability with staff and new employees.
  • Assign new employees a nurse preceptor and act as a preceptor as needed.
  • Assist with student assignments when required. Mentors and trains new staff members as needed.
  • Assist DON with operational items as assigned.
  • Maintain a safe environment for staff, patients, physicians and visitors.
  • Monitor staff adherence to policies and procedures.
  • Monitor efficient room turnover.
  • Assists in monthly staff meetings for information sharing in the OR arena
  • Assists with completing staff yearly performance reviews
  • Encourages staff to seek opportunities for patient care improvement

  • Major Duties / Responsibilities
  • Adheres to the Center’s policies and procedures and the Profession Standards of Nursing Practice
  • Assures Patient Safety in the OR and Never Leaves Patient Unattended
  • Verbally confirms with patient, legal guardian or surgeon the identity of the patient and the site of surgery.
  • Ensures that the patient’s name and site of surgery is consistent with the consent form,  and document this on the procedure verification checklist. If marking is required, the Circulator is responsible for viewing the mark prior to surgery.
  • Checks for allergies, dentures, jewelry, prosthesis, hairpins, nail polish, wigs, etc.
  • Reassures patient; introduces self and the scrub personnel. Checks the patient's physical comfort.
  • Assures that history and physical and appropriate ordered lab work is on the chart before the patient is anesthetized. An interim history and physical is to be done by the anesthesia provider if there is no history and physical present.
