Reporting to the Director of Building Operations and Maintenance, the building maintenance mechanic for electrical maintenance performs a wide variety of tasks that support the operation, installation, repair, maintenance and service of commercial and residential electrical systems on college-owned or operated facilities. The individual also assists others as needed to perform general maintenance and repairs on camps equipment and property structures.
Specific Responsibilities:
- Assist electrician with installations including but not limited to install wiring, conduit, lighting, power systems, motors, and other electrical components.
- Assist electrician with maintenance and repair:
Maintain existing electrical systems, troubleshoot malfunctions, and repair or replace faulty components like circuit breakers, transformers, and wiring. - Site and material preparation:
Clean and prepare work areas, gather tools and materials, and transport equipment to job site. Clean up and put away tools and materials at end of day and upon completion. - Change light bulbs and ballasts. Follow the college's universal waste disposal plan.
- Clean and remove bugs, dust, and debris from lights, light lens. Replace broken light lens.
- Test, clean, and/or replace a variety of equipment such as but not limited to: smoke detectors, fans, light switches, receptacles, street lights, light fixtures, and emergency lights.
- Check temperatures and program thermostats.
- Cut and install ceiling tiles.
- Make minor plumbing, electrical, HVAC repairs.
- Perform a variety of preventive maintenance tasks such as:
Replace filters, clean dryer vents, sweep debris from drains, check fuel levels, install window air conditioner, etc. - Respond to emergency calls such as flooding, hot/cold calls, security/lock issues, broken windows, drainage problems, no hot water, power outages, and fire system equipment failures. May be asked to make calls to contractors for service.
- Perform minor repair on kitchen and laundry equipment.
- Work as part of the maintenance team to perform group projects such as but not limited to:
Installation and removal of window air conditioners, event set ups, turnover of residential buildings after academic year, ready buildings for student return, etc. There may be limited time off during these periods and working hours are subject to change according to the College's schedule. - Provide assistance during special events and functions.
- Complete work tickets in a timely manner and update work status daily.
- Operate a variety of hand and power tools such as (but not limited to):
Screwdrivers, drill driver, utility knife, channel lock, pliers, hammer, adjustable wrenches, level, hex/torx wrenches, circular saw, jig saw, table saw, etc. - Clean equipment in related areas. Keep mechanical rooms and work areas clean.
- Perform snow removal as needed.
- Operate, maintain, and use in a safe manner college equipment, tools, and vehicles.
- Participate in an on-call rotation as well as provide service or back-up as requested.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma/GED equivalency or active enrollment in a related vo-tech program required
- One year of related experience or active enrollment in a related vo-tech program required.
- Valid electrical apprentice license through Maryland DLLR preferred
- Must have ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work under deadlines.
- Must have basic computer skills and be able to navigate maintenance management software, e-mail, and online training. Must be able to use computers and tablets for work order documentation and mandatory safety training.
- Must have valid driver's license with two or less points.
- Must be able to wear a respirator (i.e., N95), with required medical evaluation and annual fit testing
- Must be able to work during emergency weather events including but not limited to snow, hurricanes, tornados, etc.
- Must be able to respond to campus emergencies when called.
- Must have the ability to read and comprehend written instructions, procedures, service manuals, and safety information.
- Must have the ability to express oneself orally as well as in writing.
- Must have the ability to learn departmental policies, procedures, and mechanical systems, proper use of tools and materials used to perform duties within a ninety-day probationary period.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Exposure to operating machinery consistent with care of grounds.
