Senior Maintenance Craftsman - DPW Water
General Statement of Duties and Responsibilities
- Performs a variety of Journeyman level skilled duties and manual labor tasks in construction, operation and maintenance of main pipes, reservoirs, gates and similar equipment.
- Works under supervision of the Foreman, Working Foreman, or Head Treatment Plant Operator; may supervise a small crew of workers of a lower pay grade.
- Performs maintenance of pumps, valves, hydrants, mains, services, meter and other system equipment and instrumentation.
- Performs maintenance of buildings, grounds, vehicles, reservoirs and watershed.
- Installs, replaces, repairs and tests water meters and other system equipment.
- Opens and shuts valves and gates, operates other system components and equipment.
- Lay and connects service pipes with street mains; installs new water mains, valves and hydrants.
- Directs emergency repair crews working on water leaks and breaks.
- Inspects work of maintenance craftsmen and laborers to verify conformity to specifications and blueprints; performs other related work as required.
- High School graduate or equivalent.
- Massachusetts D2 Drinking Water Operators License, or ability to obtain necessary licenses within six months of hire.
- Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License Class D required.
- Minimum of two (2) years of full-time experience as a Water System maintenance Craftsman.
- Demonstrated knowledge of practices, material and equipment used in maintenance, construction, and repair of municipal water systems.
- Ability to work from blueprints, sketches, and layouts.
- Knowledge of operation and maintenance of tools, including power, motorized, and hand tools/equipment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions in municipal water systems.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to use measuring devices in the performance of duties.
- Ability to assess emergency situations and take appropriate action.
- Ability to follow departmental rules, regulations, policies and practices.
- Ability to work courteously and harmoniously with City employees and the public.
- Ability to complete reports timely and accurately.
- Physical: significant portion of day standing and bending; frequent climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching; frequent lifting/carrying/pushing/pulling up to ~50 lbs; 95% outdoor work in varying temperatures.
- Visual: reading documents for general understanding and analytical purposes.
