Job Description
New England Cancer Specialists (NECS) is seeking a highly skilled and mission-driven Controller to oversee all day-to-day financial operations for our multi-site oncology practice. Reporting to the VP of Finance, the Controller leads a three-member finance team and manages core functions including accounting, accounts payable, non-patient accounts receivable, payroll, retirement plan compliance, and financial reporting. This role ensures the organization has strong financial systems, internal controls, and processes to support its strategic objectives.
The Controller acts as a key advisor to leadership, contributes to budgeting and forecasting, and supports presentations to internal and external stakeholders.
NECS is a private medical practice composed of 18 oncologists and hematologists serving the region from 5 different locations in Maine and New Hampshire. - Oversee all accounting operations, accounts, ledgers, and reporting systems to ensure compliance with GAAP and regulatory requirements.
- Lead timely month-end close, account reconciliations, and preparation of accurate financial statements.
- Maintain strong internal controls for revenue, expenses, budgeting, and financial transactions.
- Review payroll processes for accuracy, including multi-state payroll and retirement plan compliance.
- Coordinate all financial review and audit activities; manage data requests and engagement with external auditors.
- Analyze financial data and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for senior leadership.
- Collaborate and assist the VP of Finance on budget development, financial plans, variance analysis, and recommendations.
- Ensure alignment of expenditures with approved budgets; prepare financial materials for internal and external users.
- Support cash flow forecasting and partner with senior leadership to assess operational financial performance and systems needs.
- Supervise and develop finance staff; provide coaching, training, and performance feedback.
- Strengthen communication across the organization, ensuring staff understand financial procedures and systems.
- Evaluate and enhance departmental workflow, technology, and processes to improve efficiency.
- Provide financial insights to support business planning, contract evaluation, and strategic decision-making.
- Represent NECS with internal partners, external agencies, and community or industry groups as needed.
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance required; CPA or MBA strongly preferred.
- 7‑10 years of progressive healthcare finance experience, including accounting, audit, budgeting, reporting, and staff leadership; healthcare or oncology experience preferred.
- Demonstrated expertise in GAAP, financial reporting, audits, payroll, AP/AR, general ledger management, and retirement plan compliance.
- Proven leadership ability with experience coaching, developing, and managing staff.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex financial concepts to non-finance audiences.
- Advanced analytical skills and experience with financial systems, reporting tools, and technology implementation.
- High level of integrity, strategic thinking, and commitment to NECS's mission.
- Ability to take initiative to identify issues and recommend solutions.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and succeed in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
- Has a strategic understanding of information management systems and experience with integrating financial report systems to support business objectives.
