OverviewThe Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator reports to the Mineral County Headquarters at New Creek, the Short Gap Substation, or the Skyline Substation. Under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include operating motorized highway maintenance equipment, making major and minor repairs, and performing related field tasks. May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather.
Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program depends on hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, and maintaining/obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
Responsibilities and Duties- Operate highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.
- Make major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures; perform minor mechanical repairs in the field (e.g., changing tires, blades, filters).
- Perform equipment maintenance (cleaning, lubricating, checking fluid levels).
- Flag and set up traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects.
- Shovel materials, clean culverts, mow, and perform brush cutting.
- Prepare and participate in maintenance tasks; travel may be required.
- Operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments; drive vehicles GVWR 26,001 or greater.
- Patch cement, pavement, and bridge decks; seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
- Repair and construct various culvert types; clean equipment and workshop.
- Some positions may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
- Maintain a valid driver's license; a valid Class A or Class B CDL is required in the area of assignment.
- Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks.
- Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
- Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
- Operate heavy vehicles with GVWR of 26,001 or greater.
- Perform preventive maintenance: clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
- Repair and construct various culvert types; patch cement and pavement; repair bridge decks.
- Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces; repair and maintain tools and equipment.
- Read and follow operating manuals and specifications; climb and work on high steel structures as required.
- Travel may be required; maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Knowledge of procedures, techniques, and equipment related to the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures.
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods in the building maintenance trades.
- Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment; read operating manuals and specifications.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools; climb high steel structures.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments; diagnose and repair less complex mechanical problems.
- Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders) and to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCEEquipment Operator: A valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. No substitutions for Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
