Responsibilities- The Transportation Worker 2 Equipment Operator will report to the Lewis County Headquarters. Under general supervision, performs full-performance level skilled work in the construction and maintenance of highways.
- Operate motorized highway maintenance equipment such as skid steer, utility tractor, aerial bucket truck, front-end loader, tandem-axle truck, and snowplow.
- Make major repairs to highways, culverts, and bridge structures. Perform minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
- Be responsible for equipment maintenance including cleaning and lubricating equipment and checking fluid levels.
- Flag, erect traffic control signs and barricades on construction and maintenance projects; shovel materials, clean culverts, mow, and brush cut.
- May be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather.
- Performs other related duties as required.
The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. Progression through the apprenticeship program is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as maintaining and/or obtaining a class A or B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
- In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
Pay Grade 11H
Hourly Rate: $17.5313
Typical Duties and ResponsibilitiesTransportation Worker 2 – Equipment Operator
- Drive dump, flatbed, or tandem-axle trucks.
- Operate power vegetation equipment and attachments.
- Operate highway maintenance equipment and attachments.
- Operate heavy vehicles/GVWR 26,001 or greater.
- Clean and lubricate equipment and check fluid levels.
- Make minor mechanical repairs in the field such as changing tires, blades, or filters.
- Repair and construct various culvert types.
- Patch cement, pavement and bridge decks.
- Seal joints and cracks in paved surfaces.
- Clean equipment and workshop.
- Some positions in the Transportation Worker classifications may require certification(s) in the area of assignment after employment.
- Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver's license is required.
- In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required.
- Knowledge of the procedures, techniques, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards and applicable safety standards and procedures in the area of assignment.
- Knowledge of maintenance and repair methods practiced in the building maintenance trades.
- Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used.
- Ability to read operating manuals and specifications in the area of assignment.
- Ability to safely operate basic hand and power tools.
- Ability to climb high steel structures.
- Ability to operate and maintain highway equipment and attachments.
- Ability to diagnose less complex mechanical problems and follow appropriate procedures for repair.
- Ability to maintain routine records (timecards, work repair orders).
- Ability to use hand tools and operate motorized equipment in the area of assignment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to train and work cooperatively with other skilled and semi-skilled workers.
No formal education required.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCEEquipment Operator: A valid class A or class B Commercial Driver’s License is required. No substitutions for Equipment Operator CDL requirement.
