Nature of Work

The Transportation Building and Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 performs a variety of skilled and semiskilled work at the full performance level in the building trades in connection with the maintenance and repair of Transportation's facilities, buildings and grounds. Work assignments usually require skill in and knowledge of maintenance and repair methods and practices in several building maintenance trades. Performs related work as required.

Dependent upon the posting:
Specific positions may require certification from a federal EPA approved testing organization, as a certified technician, required by the Clean Air Act on refrigerant recycling. May also required, with proper training, to work in asbestos or other environmental issues.

Typical Duties and Responsibilities
  • Repairs and replaces walls, floors, steps, doors, window frames and other wooden articles or equipment using saws, power and hand tools
  • Repairs and replaces lighting fixtures, bulbs, switches, and wiring; installs simple electrical equipment and assists in installation and repair of electrical equipment
  • Repairs and replaces sinks, toilets, faucets, pipes, drains, and water lines; unstops toilets, drains and sewer lines
  • Check equipment to determine operational readiness
  • Diagnose less complex mechanical problems
  • Performs masonry repair work such as preparing cement, installing reinforcing steel rods, patching and finishing cement work, and replacing damaged masonry
  • Paints window frames, buildings, sheds, rooms, and equipment
  • Gathers and disposes of trash and waste materials
  • Moves furniture, loads and unloads supplies, moves equipment by hand or with dollies and performs other manual tasks
  • Repairs and maintains tools and equipment used
  • Performs routine grounds work such as mowing and trimming, removing snow, sweeping sidewalks, and picking up trash
  • May perform building service work such as sweeping, mopping and vacuuming floors and washing walls, windows, mirrors and fixtures.
  • Travel may be required; therefore, a valid driver’s license is required
Skills and Knowledge
  • Knowledge of the standard methods, practices, tools and equipment used in a variety of building maintenance trades
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards and related safety procedures
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment used in building maintenance
  • Ability to perform routine carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry work
  • Ability to determine materials needed for specific tasks
  • Ability to repair and maintain tools and equipment used
  • Ability to perform arduous tasks
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Minimum Requirements

REQUIRED TRAINING/

EDUCATION:

No education requirement.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Four (4) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience in building maintenance, building construction, in the installation and maintenance of building electrical or heating systems, or highway related experience. Possession of a valid driver’s license is also required.
  • Substitution:
    Successful completion of study from a regionally accredited college or university or related business or vocational school training may be substituted for the general experience on a year‑for‑year basis for up to four (4) years of the required experience.
