WG-03 TRAILS MAJOR DUTIES MAY INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE FOLLOWING:
- Performs all aspects of trail maintenance and construction as assigned by the trails maintenance work leader, or designee. Examples of the work performed include: clears brush and fallen logs from trail corridor; cleans, repairs, and constructs log or rock drains; installs log or rock retainer bars/steps and checks and/or constructs foot and stock bridges from native materials; constructs and maintains trail structures such as turnpikes, causeways, cribbing trail tread, riprap and rock retaining walls;
constructs new segments of trail; and performs rehabilitation and meadow restoration on abandoned or heavily impacted sections of trail. - Uses shovels, picks, rakes, axes, pulaskis, and various types of saws (e.g., McLeod's crosscut, pole, bow, etc.), boppers, chisels, sledgehammers, single jacks, rock bars, draw knives, measuring tapes, levels, squares, scribes, gasoline-powered jackhammers and rock drills, chainsaws, and other trade tools when performing trail maintenance and construction duties.
- Maintains the tools and equipment used in safe operating condition. Ensures work is performed safely and within prescribed NPS standards.
- Operates heavy power equipment such as lawn mowers, portable snow blowers, and all types of hand tools (such as shovels rakes, lawn edging equipment, etc.), to maintain buildings, grounds, roads, trails, etc.
- Loads and unloads supplies and materials from trucks, trailers, dollies, etc. Moves furniture, removes and sets signs, paints picnic tables and signs, rakes and waters lawns, trims trees and shrubbery, picks up litter, and cleans fire pits.
- Digs ditches and trenches with pick and shovel where soil is hard and compact and must grade or slope; occasionally breaks up pavement, soil, or concrete; mixes and pours concrete, asphalt, and hot/cold mix; fills and levels holes in damaged roads. Moves heavily loaded wheelbarrows and hand trucks; uses heavy type power mowers including adjusting blades, cleaning and oiling. Cuts heavy trees with axe or chainsaw;
stacks heavy logs, lumber, and sacks of cement, etc., or performs other duties requiring similar judgment and comparable physical effort. - Performs janitorial duties for buildings in the absence of janitor and as back-up support.
The duty station of this position will be located at the headquarters complex in Glen Jean, West Virginia. Glen Jean, WV is a small rural community located approximately 10 miles from Beckley, WV. Beckley offers a wide range of educational (K-12 and small colleges) opportunities, medical, dental, hospital, and banking services, entertainment, shopping, and other amenities common in a small city, including passenger air, rail, and bus services.
Major medical, shopping, educational, and other services can be found in the Charleston, WV (60 miles north of Beckley). Housing available for rent or purchase is readily available in cities and towns surrounding the park. Rental and purchase prices of housing are considered moderate. There are outstanding recreational opportunities available in the local area including hiking, varied water based activities, camping, rock climbing, snow skiing, horseback riding, mountain biking, fishing, hunting, etc.
In addition to the three units of the National Park Service, you will find over a dozen State Parks, Forests, and Wildlife Management Areas, within 50 miles of Beckley, including Army Corps lakes, and two U.S. Forests.

You will be required to wear a uniform and comply with the National Park Service uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided. - WORK SCHEDULE:
You may be required to work on-call, evenings, weekends, holidays, and overtime. - Government housing may be available.
- MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT:
Applicants must be at least 18 years old or 16 years old with certain conditions (high school graduation or equivalent, vocational training, or current enrollment in secondary school and work allowed during breaks or part-time during the school year).
