Job OverviewOversees operations and directs hospital staff on off-shifts and holidays. Represents Hospital and Nursing Administration. Facilitates the flow of patients into and through the hospital, 24/7, by monitoring the status of and coordinating bed assignments.
Core Duties and Responsibilities- Using available data, makes appropriate administrative decisions regarding complex, predictable and unpredictable situations affecting the hospital, such as public relations, patient care, medical‑legal, financial issues, bed coordination, etc. Validates decisions when necessary with the Administrator on‑call.
- Initiates appropriate actions in emergency situations such as power failure, disaster, fires, etc. Functions in the Administrator on‑call role until the Administrator arrives and keeps on‑call informed on the status.
- Manages public relation matters regarding media inquiries concerning patients and unusual events.
- Assists staff in nursing and other departments to resolve problems that impact delivery of patient care during the off‑shifts, collaborating with department directors as necessary.
- Consistently provides current bed status of all units and patients to the Emergency Department physician, Med‑Com, and MARS for expeditious patient transfers and provides oversight to throughput nurses.
- Assesses bed availability and/or direct admissions to determine transfer status and coordinates transfers from outside facilities and Emergency Department.
- Assesses unit activity level during rounds and confers with the Charge Nurse on unusual patient care situations.
- Assists the Charge Nurse in resolving complex problems related to staff performance, inappropriate behaviors, or other concerns involving patients, visitors, or staff.
- Receives reports defining unit activities that may impact house‑wide staffing needs and makes preliminary staffing plans.
- Assigns Nursing Resource Pool and Per Diem staff to meet house‑wide staffing needs.
- Collaborates with operational support departments (housekeeping, transport, etc.) to maximize patient throughput.
- Displays expertise when assisting with clinical nursing issues and consults with other professionals as needed.
- Negotiates decisions with physician, visitors, staff and others in a professional manner.
- Conducts patient rounding and facilitates service recovery in a timely manner.
- Serves as liaison to ancillary and support departments to support coordination of house‑wide improvement initiatives.
- Responds to emergency pages, assesses need for additional help, coordinates plan for patient transfer, and ensures family support.
- Serves as liaison to Nurse Commuter Program.
- Participates in professional organizations.
- Participates in Performance Improvement activities as appropriate.
- Current license to practice Registered Professional Nursing in West Virginia, or applicable state where services will be performed.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN).
- Specialty certification in nursing administration.
- Five (5) years nursing experience preferably in a hospital setting.
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing the need for employees to manually lift patients and limiting safe patient handling to 35 pounds. All transfers, lifts and repositioning will be completed utilizing lift equipment and/or patient handling aids as indicated by the patient’s profile and appropriate algorithms.
Heavy/Hard work:
Work requires strength and/or stamina, lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying materials and equipment weighing 40+ lbs.
Working closely with others, working protracted or irregular hours, working around biohazards, working around infectious diseases, working with or near the deceased, working with hands in water, working with electrical hazards associated with patient care equipment.
