The Southern Appalachia Labor School’s mission is to provide education, research, and linkages for working‑class and disenfranchised people in order to promote understanding, empowerment, and change. SALS is committed to developing a real comprehension of the social, economic, and legal structure which affects the lives of Appalachian people. The Southern Appalachian Labor School will provide free lunches and books to children under the age of 18, and will offer home‑repair help to low‑income families, veterans, disabled, elderly individuals, and those affected by natural disasters with a focus on health and safety.
MemberDuties
The Southern Appalachian Labor School VISTAs will serve rural communities in Fayette County, WV. They will coordinate activities to aid low‑income families with food, clothing, health, and home repairs; identify homes of low‑income families and work with the housing manager and construction manager at SALS to qualify the families for grants for home repairs; and coordinate with the supervisor of the Feed and Read program for children under 18.
