Location: Berkeley Springs

The Mine Superintendent reports directly to the Production Manager and provides leadership to four (4) Shift Supervisors. This role is responsible for overseeing all facets of plant processing and packaging operations, including bulk loading via railcars and trucks, within a unionized environment.

The Mine Superintendent ensures safe, efficient, and compliant operations while coordinating production schedules, managing personnel, and driving continuous improvement. This position partners closely with Maintenance, Quality, EHS, and other cross-functional teams to meet operational goals, maintain product quality, and uphold U.S. Silica’s safety and performance standards. Strategic planning, problem-solving, and operational leadership are essential to success in this role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Supervise and coordinate daily production activities across all shifts.
  • Develop, implement, and manage production schedules to meet business demands.
  • Monitor production processes and identify opportunities for efficiency, quality, and cost improvement.
  • Evaluate equipment performance and ensure machinery operates as designed.
  • Prepare, analyze, and maintain accurate production and operational reports.
  • Troubleshoot operational issues and lead timely resolution efforts.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Maintenance, and other departments to achieve production objectives.
Compliance & Safety
  • Ensure full compliance with all federal and state regulations, operating permits, labor agreements, and U.S. Silica policies and procedures.
  • Promote a strong safety culture through regular safety meetings, inspections, and proactive hazard identification.
  • Ensure employee workplace exams and safety requirements are completed and addressed in a timely manner.
  • Partner with EHS to maintain compliance with health and safety standards.
Maintenance & Asset Management
  • Assume ownership of process equipment and plant assets.
  • Work closely with the Maintenance Supervisor and Maintenance Planner to schedule preventive maintenance and repairs.
  • Ensure mechanical and electrical issues are identified and resolved efficiently.
  • Support reliability initiatives for rotating equipment, elevators, and conveyor systems.
  • Ensure all shipped product meets customer quality specifications and is free from contamination during loading and packaging.
Process Improvement & Cost Optimization
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives, including implementation of 5S throughout the operation.
  • Train and support Supervisors in housekeeping standards and detailed execution plans.
  • Identify process bottlenecks and root causes of substandard performance.
  • Develop and execute corrective action plans to address operational challenges.
  • Implement cost-saving initiatives and process improvements.
People Leadership & Labor Relations
  • Manage the production workforce in accordance with the applicable Labor Agreement.
  • Lead, coach, and develop Shift Supervisors and hourly employees.
  • Encourage employee involvement in problem-solving and continuous improvement.
  • Foster a culture of mutual respect, accountability, and collaboration.
  • Ensure Supervisors are accurately reviewing and approving employee time in the Krones timekeeping system.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related technical discipline (Mineral Processing preferred).
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in mining or industrial operations.
  • Experience in a mining environment preferred; sand mining experience is highly preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of:
  • Elevators and conveyor systems
  • Rotating equipment
  • Mechanical systems and processes
  • Demonstrated ability to lead in a unionized environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills with the ability to anticipate and prevent issues.
  • Ability to serve as a technical expert within the process area.
  • Proven judgment and decision-making skills with the ability to act independently.
  • Strong communication skills across all organizational levels.
  • High personal integrity and professionalism; represents the company positively at all times.
  • Experience with ERP systems; JDE experience is a plus.
