Job Statement/Summary
The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) supports the delivery of direct services and communication with patients across the Southern West Virginia Health System. While this position does not involve hands‑on clinical procedures, the LPN/CMA provides patient guidance, communicates health maintenance and disease management instructions as directed by providers, and assists with follow‑ups and care coordination under clinical supervision.
Travel to other sites is an expectation of LPNs and CMAs who are hired as “float” coverage and may be expected of other LPNs and CMAs as well to ensure quality care to SWVHS patients.
Primary Care / Acute Care Clinic Assignment
- Responds to patient telephone inquiries, provides information per inquiry, and accurately reports concerns to the provider.
- Instructs patients on health care information as directed by the provider.
- Assists in processing patient cases and related tasks under provider guidance.
- Records and completes patient chart documentation as instructed.
- Assists in retrieving records and reports from consults and referrals.
- Maintains effective and compassionate communication with patients, families, and staff.
- Operates standard office equipment including computers, fax machines, and copiers.
- Assists visitors in the facility by directing or connecting them with the appropriate personnel.
- Projects a professional image and adheres to all LPCC/SWVHS policies in communication.
- Assists in confirming and scheduling patient appointments.
- Submits documentation in a timely and accurate manner.
- Monitors and maintains office equipment and supplies appropriately.
- Supports and assists in the training of new employees.
- Cross trains to perform functions in medical records and appointment scheduling.
- Attends required in‑service trainings and meetings as assigned by the Regional Nurse Manager.
- Refers all clinical‑related questions or concerns to the Regional Nurse Manager.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
School-Based Clinic Assignment (if assigned)
- Registers patients.
- Assists in checking appointments.
- Accepts cash payments from clients and writes receipts.
- Performs routine data entry.
- Helps to ensure the safety, health, and wellbeing of clients while they are in the lobby area.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

- Utilizes electronic health systems efficiently.
- Maintains professionalism and patient confidentiality.
Education (level and type) and Related Work Experience
- Graduate from a Licensed Practical Nurse Program or Certified Medical Assistant program.
- Holds a current unincumbered LPN License or a CMA certification.
- Possesses basic computer literacy.
- Demonstrates ability to comply with safety protocols and communicate effectively in English.
