Patient Care Technician

Overview

Assist in providing therapeutic activities and support to patients under the direction of the Therapeutic Program Director. The Activity Aide observes and influences the patient’s behavior and communication while interacting with them and garnering their trust. Encourages patients to participate in social, recreational, and other therapeutic activities that enhance interpersonal skills and develop social and therapeutic relationships. Good communication and documentation skills are required for this position.

Follow safety protocols to ensure the well-being of patients and staff. All other related duties assigned. Mandatory overtime is an essential function of this position. Applicants selected for employment must successfully complete a chemical urinalysis and breath analysis drug screening test. All employees shall be subject to drug and alcohol testing for probable cause as set forth by agency and bureau policies.

• Assist in providing therapeutic activities and support to patients under the direction of the Therapeutic Program Director.
• Observe and influence the patient’s behavior and communication while interacting with them and garnering their trust.

• Maintain good communication and documentation; supervise/monitor patients to and from treatment areas and in special care areas.
• Assist mall staff with implementing therapeutic treatment plans and activities as assigned; act as liaison between mall services staff and the treatment teams.
• Monitor and document patient participation in activities with completion of nonattendance alternatives and related documentation.
• Ensure accurate completion of assigned reports/documentation; participate in maintenance of a clean, orderly, and safe environment and report needs for repair to Maintenance.
• Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure the well-being of patients and staff; perform all other related duties as assigned.

William R. Sharpe, Jr. Hospital, located in Weston, West Virginia, is a 200-bed acute psychiatric care facility owned and operated by the West Virginia Department of Health Facilities. The hospital offers a wide range of services to patients either committed to the hospital through civil commitment or, in the case of forensic patients, ordered through the judicial system. Through ongoing collaboration with West Virginia University’s Department of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry, a variety of medical and clinical professionals partner with the hospital’s own staff to work diligently with patients to achieve a smooth transition back to the community after discharge.
