Overview

Emergency Medical Technician- EMT

Position Overview

The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients' dignity and ensuring community safety.

Responsibilities
  • Attend instruction sessions for orientation, EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations, maintain EMS certification and other required programs.
  • Provide out-of-hospital care to patients and safe ambulance transport in consideration of statewide protocols and medical command direction and assessment to the level of authorization and training under WV EMS Rules and Regulations {64

    CFR
    48} and guidelines.
  • Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 12 lbs (refer to standard limits) and up to 250 lbs with assistance, to a height of 33 inches, for a distance of 10 feet (WV OEMS).
  • Have the ability to hear, comprehend and respond to spoken information from co-workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers and sounds common to the emergency scene.
  • Verbally communicate in person, via telephone and telecommunications using the English language. Meet the minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle with WV OEMS guidance.
  • Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions. Document via written or electronic means patient information utilizing an approved WV OEMS record system.
  • Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills for patient care; bend, stoop, crawl and walk on uneven surfaces.
  • Inspect EMS equipment to ensure adequate supplies, verify proper operation, refuel and perform fluid checks of the assigned ambulance and report needed maintenance.
  • Respond to callback or call-in emergency situations and assist other emergency personnel as required; complete tasks assigned by supervisors and management.
  • Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform general maintenance and cleaning of stations, training facilities and ambulances; work as a self-starter and adapt to a team-based management structure.
  • Perform event stand-by operations including sports events and community festivals with significant attendance.
  • Respond to hazardous material incidents at the first-responder level and perform emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
  • Understand stress response and personal well-being; understand body substance isolation and patients’ rights under HIPAA.
  • Interact professionally with outside agencies and personnel including medical facility staff, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and related roles.
Requirements
  • General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operation, and proper use of EMS equipment.
  • Ability to learn through training and use a variety of EMS methods.
  • Ability to learn road/street systems and layout of assigned communities.
  • Obtain necessary skills including airway management, CPR and applicable medications and defibrillator use; provide trauma care including hemorrhage control, shock management, wound bandaging, immobilization of injuries.
Working Environment/Conditions

EMS operations occur 24/7 in all weather conditions. Ambulances and EMS personnel must be prepared to respond at a moment’s notice and maintain field operations until the situation is resolved or relieved.

EMS personnel operate in an uncontrolled public arena. Members must be mentally, physically and emotionally prepared to handle a wide variety of patient types, behaviors and situations. Safety, professionalism and compassion are essential traits.

Special Requirements and Qualifications
  • Must be 18 years of age
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Successful completion of Workforce evaluations and/or equivalent educational screening approved by Jan-Care/GEMS
  • EVO’S must maintain a valid driver’s license with a good driving history as determined by our insurance company
  • Jan-Care/GEMS is a drug-free company; employees must pass initial and random screenings
  • Background checks prior to employment: OIG Excluded Parties List, Criminal History, Driving History, Child/Elder Abuse, References
  • WV Office of EMS certification requirements and denial conditions as applicable
  • Must maintain a valid telephone number
  • Must maintain valid Health Care Provider level CPR certification
  • Must maintain EMT-8 certification with the WV OEMS office
  • Proof of TB and Hepatitis vaccination
