Position Overview
:
The primary objective of EMS is to provide safe and compassionate ambulance and medical transportation, while preserving patients 0dignity and ensuring community safety. EMS personnel perform non-emergency convalescent transfers, community event medical stand-by, and respond to emergency calls to provide immediate care and transport to the critically sick and injured at the level of training and authorization.
- Attend orientation sessions for EMS operations, compliance, emergency vehicle operations, maintain EMS certification, and other required programs.
- Provide out-of-hospital care and safe ambulance transport in accordance with statewide protocols and medical command direction, at the level of authorization and training under WV EMS Rules and Regulations (64
CFR
48) and guidelines. - Lift, carry, and balance a minimum of 125 lbs alone and 250 lbs with assistance, at a height of 33 inches, for 10 feet (as applicable).
- Demonstrate hearing, comprehension, and response to information from co-workers, patients, physicians, dispatchers, and sounds at the emergency scene.
- Verbally communicate in English (in person, via telephone, and telecommunications). Meet minimum vision requirements to operate a motor vehicle in WV.
- Read and comprehend written materials under stressful conditions. Document patient information using an approved WV OEMS record system.
- Demonstrate manual dexterity and fine motor skills to provide quality patient care. Bend, stoop, crawl, and walk on uneven surfaces.
- Inspect EMS equipment, verify proper operation, refuel, perform fluid checks, and report maintenance needs.
- Respond to callbacks or call-ins and assist other emergency personnel as required; complete tasks assigned by supervisors.
- Maintain professional appearance and decorum; perform station and ambulance upkeep; be self-motivated, adaptable to change, and able to work in a team-based structure.
- Perform event stand-by operations for sporting events, community festivals, and other large gatherings.
- Respond to hazardous materials at the first-responder level and function in uncommon situations; participate in emergency operations during natural disasters and catastrophic events.
- Understand stress response and personal well-being, and have knowledge of body substance isolation and patient privacy rights under HIPAA.
- Interact professionally with outside agencies and personnel including medical facility staff, law enforcement, fire/rescue, and communication personnel.
- General knowledge of EMS operations, ambulance operation, and EMS equipment use.
- Ability to learn through training and various EMS methods.
- Ability to quickly learn road/street systems and layouts of assigned communities.
- Obtain skills including airway management, CPR, and use of medications and defibrillators appropriate to certification level; provide trauma care including hemorrhage control, treatment of shock, wound care, and immobilization.
- EMS operations occur 24/7 in all weather conditions. Personnel must be ready to respond at a moment’s notice and maintain field operations until relieved.
- Work in an uncontrolled public arena; EMS personnel must be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to handle diverse patient types, behaviors, and situations. Safety, professionalism, and compassion are essential traits.

- Successful completion of Workforce evaluations or equivalent educational screening approved by Jan-Care/GEMS
- EMVOs must maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving history
- Jan-Care/GEMS is a drug-free company; employees must pass initial and random screenings
