Responsible for decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of surgical instruments. Maintaining an adequate supply of sterile instruments for use during surgical procedures. Cleaning of all areas of the surgical department.
Minimum Qualifications- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: High school diploma or equivalent
- Education, Certification, and/or Licensure: Central Supply certification
- Experience: Two years experience with instrument decontamination and sterilization
- Experience: Experience with housekeeping duties
- Decontamination, cleaning, and sterilization of surgical instrumentation for all hospital departments, physician offices, and rural health clinics
- Properly prepares instruments for processing
- Receives, inspects, and sterilizes instruments, towels, basins, special packs, into sealed packages and sterilizes according to manufacturer's instructions for use and returns them to the appropriate departments
- Identifies load numbers, sterilization dates, and expiration dates on all processed supplies
- Maintains load records listing all supplies run in every load
- Performs biological/spore testing as directed in policy
- Opens and maintains the autoclaves according to policy, including weekly (and as needed for soiling) cleaning and reports any malfunction to the OR Manager
- Maintains Central Supply as a clean, sterile environment
- Ensures adequate supplies for the Central Supply Department and cleaning supplies by bi-weekly ordering
- Monitors sterilized instruments for outdates and re-wraps as indicated
- Maintains solutions and proper function of the sonic washer
- Demonstrates and practices approved hand washing and isolation procedures
- Completes all mandatory annual in-servicing and core competencies as per hospital and departmental policy
- Safeguards patient privacy, maintains patient confidentiality
- Adheres to all safety and health standards, regulations and work practices; utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment
- Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned by OR Manager
- Assists with anesthesia clean up needs
- Conforms to the surgical attire dress code policy
- Assists in orientation of new employees that may be expected to assume Central Supply or housekeeping duties
- Distributes surgical scrubs to appropriate dressing rooms; ensures dirty laundry and linens are transported to laundry pickup area
- Properly disposes of sharps and glass items
- Properly disposes of linen and trash, both contaminated and non-contaminated after all instruments are accounted for
- Cleans ancillary areas within the surgical department, such as locker rooms, autoclave room, bathrooms
- Assists, when requested, with the cleaning and dressing of stretchers on Same Day Surgery
- Safe transport of patients to the operating room or endoscopy suite when requested
- Good physical and mental health
- Able to lift heavy objects, bend, stoop, and stand for prolonged periods
- Visual and hearing ability adequate to comprehend written and verbal communication
- Will at times be exposed to communicable diseases (OSHA category 1-2 for exposure to blood and body fluids)
- Able to work in stressful environment
- Ability to wrap instruments for sterilization in the approved manner
- General cleaning ability: use of mop and bucket, reaching, overhead work, bending, stooping
