Job Overview: Under general supervision, a Correctional Officer in this class functions as a shift or unit supervisor within a Correctional Facility and holds the rank of Lieutenant. This officer contributes to the public safety mission by ensuring the safety and security of the public, staff, and inmates, and by maintaining compliance with policy and procedure.
Responsibilities- Supervise and direct the work of subordinates.
- Enforce rules, regulations, and state law necessary for the control and management of residents.
- Plan, review, and direct the work of the correctional officer workforce.
- Identify posts and ensure adequate coverage of the facility or work unit.
- Conduct, assign, supervise, and evaluate investigations or inquiries, taking appropriate action.
- Provide security over inmates and supervise daily activities, monitoring behavior and movement.
- Maintain orderly and secure operations by interacting with visitors, staff, inmates, and the public.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
Training: Graduation from a standard high school or equivalent.
Experience: Five (5) years of full‑time or equivalent part‑time paid experience as a correctional officer, probation/parole officer, U.S. Military Service, police officer, or in a criminal justice or related field.
Substitution: Successfully completed coursework from a regionally accredited college or university in corrections, criminal justice, or related field may be substituted for the required experience at a rate of one (1) year for every thirty (30) hours of study.
Conditions of Employment- Successful completion of the competitive promotion selection process governed by agency policy.
- Successful completion of a psychological examination prior to appointment and as required thereafter.
- Successful completion of a medical examination prior to appointment and as required thereafter.
- Successful completion of a physical performance test prior to appointment and annually thereafter.
- Successful completion of a chemical urinalysis drug‑screening test prior to initial employment.
- Random and reasonable‑suspicion drug testing as specified by agency policy.
- Verification of character and suitability through an agency investigation before employment.
- Background must be clear of felony convictions and activities prohibited by the Prison Rape Elimination Act.
- Recurring background checks as required by law, rule, standard, or policy.
- Work various shifts; schedules are subject to change and may require mandatory overtime.
- Availability to work at any location in the State of West Virginia.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license, continuously maintained while employed.
- Maintenance of a working telephone for agency contact.
- Completion of required training courses established by policy, law, or the Commissioner.
- Demonstrated ability to perform essential functions and tasks of the classification.
- Completion of a Supervisor Training Course within six (6) months of promotion.
- $59,900.256 – Critical Vacancy Pay Facilities (e.g., Huttonsville Correctional Center and Jail, Mount Olive Correctional Complex and Jail, etc.)
- $54,900.144 – Remainder of the Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation facilities
- Retention incentive of $2,000 after the first year of continuous service in the position.
- Annual base building pay differential of $250 on July 1, starting July 1, 2024, applied above the maximum of the compensation range.
- Special hiring rates continued for promotions to Correctional Officer 4, 5, 6, and 7 classifications, with the yearly base building differential added.
- Additional pay differential of $5,000 removed if the employee leaves a Critical Vacancy Pay Facility, unless transferring to another CVPF.
