The Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston, Department of Faith Formation is seeking an assistant director for Camp Carlo, our Catholic youth adventure camp located in Huttonsville, West Virginia. The assistant director of Camp Carlo will work in collaboration with the Director of Camp Carlo and the Department of Faith Formation with duties delegated and as assigned in the overseeing of the operations of our Catholic summer camp.

SUMMARY

The Assistant Director of Camp Carlo, as a member of Diocesan Services, is committed to advancing the mission of Jesus Christ, consistent with the core purpose and Gospel values enunciated in the Diocesan Services’ Mission Statement toward the mission of helping young people fall in love with Jesus Christ and His Church.

The Assistant Director of Camp Carlo assists, as directed by the Department of Faith Formation and Director of Camp Carlo, the planning and execution of the summer youth camps to be held at the camp property in Huttonsville, including the hiring and supervision of all temporary camp staff, from December 1st to August 31st.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Assist in all aspects of Camp Carlo’s intentionally Catholic, fun, prayerful, and catechetical adventure summer camp programming providing ongoing conversion experiences that connect young people to the heart of Christ and His church.
  • Work with, and under the direction of Department of Faith Formation and Camp Carlo Director, to hire, train, schedule, minister to and lead adult and young‑adult staff as effective, professional, faithful youth ministers, including preparing them and guiding them through leading a successful and distinct ministry program.
  • Take special responsibility in supporting the Camp Director and Department of Faith Formation as it pertains to oversight, administration, and safe implementation of specialized activities as designed by the American Camp Association and Diocesan Camp Planning Team.
  • Oversee the off‑season development of Camp Carlo, including the design of new adventure catechesis experiences for next summer.
  • Market summer‑camp program through a wide variety of advertising approaches.
  • Communicate with pastors, youth ministers, and parents to register young people in summer youth camps, supporting the needs of each individual, and helping them to maximize the impact of the young person’s experience.
  • Minister to the residential young‑adult camp staff including supporting them, coaching them in healthy community life that includes strong relationships, and guiding them in personal and spiritual growth.
  • Build cohesion between diocesan campus ministry efforts and summer‑youth‑camps programming efforts, in collaboration with campus ministers, as congruent sources of effective young adult ministry that support and fuel each other.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES
  • Works early mornings, weekends, long hours, holidays/holydays as needed.
  • Attends and participates in regular meetings with the Department of Faith Formation and Director of Camp Carlo.
  • Hosts individuals and groups using the facilities as needed.
  • Performs other job‑related duties as assigned by the Camping Director and/or the Department of Faith Formation.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Oversees, in consultation with the Camping Director, the young‑adult, temporary, summer camp‑staff.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience in parish and diocesan youth ministry, and outdoor/adventure education preferred.
  • Practicing Catholic with an active faith life.
  • Desire to model authentic Catholic life and community to young people in summer camping ministry.
  • Take to heart the message: “If you don’t know what to do, go where you can help” in managing summer staff and offering a high‑quality program.
  • Proficient with computers, especially with Word & Excel. Ability to do basic web layout and work with Apple products ideal.
