PositionDescription
Responsible for coordinating field safety activities under the supervision of a safety manager. The Safety Coordinator works alongside craft foremen to implement safety practices in the field, ensuring that Thompson’s safety programs and performance meet or exceed OSHA, State, and Federal requirements. This role plans, implements, and coordinates programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses, while motivating and educating employees.
Job Responsibilities- Observe job activities and identify any site hazards.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory guidelines (OSHA, MSHA, EPA, etc.).
- Provide direction to management and employees for immediate action on hazards or compliance issues.
- Identify conditions that could produce accidents and communicate to operations management to eliminate those conditions.
- Communicate safety findings to peer Safety Professionals to share information between areas and sites.
- Participate in post‑accident investigations and make recommendations to prevent recurrence.
- Assist with accident documentation (e.g., witness statements, photos, etc.).
- Assist with care of an injured employee and, if directed by the safety manager, accompany the employee to initial and follow‑up medical treatment to ensure proper care and explain the light‑duty policy.
- Plan, implement, and coordinate programs to reduce or eliminate occupational injuries, illnesses, deaths, and financial losses.
- Assist with the development of corporate policies and procedures for safety.
- Maintain safety data and enter it into the EHS Management System.
- Participate and/or lead reviews of safety data and help develop responses for identified trends.
- Conduct safety training and new employee orientation.
- Create records of safety training and ensure that they are properly entered into the correct computer system.
- Complete minimum required field hazard assessments.
- Coach foremen and craft personnel on proper use of pre‑task plans.
- Visually inspect Thompson vehicles/equipment for damage and roadworthiness.
- Assist in pre‑job/shutdown planning.
- Make personal contact with working crews to build relationships, address concerns, and identify improvement opportunities.
- Counsel/coach employees when policy infractions are noted.
- Attend customer-sponsored/mandated safety meetings.
- Other duties as assigned.
- One of the following:
- High School Graduate, OSHA 30, and 5 years of industrial construction field experience
- Associate’s Degree and 3 years of industrial construction field experience
- Bachelor’s Degree and 0 years of industrial construction experience
- Candidates with an Associate’s or Bachelor’s in non‑Safety disciplines must have an OSHA 30 certification.
- 2 years of safety experience in any construction or general industry setting.
- Basic computer skills (a test may be administered).
- Must pass a drug test.
- English fluency – ability to read, write, and clearly communicate in English.
