The Medical Assistant assists in examination and treatment of patients under the direction of an urgent care provider. Manages the check-in and registration process, interviews patients, measures vital signs (pulse rate, temperature, blood pressure, weight, and height) and records information on patients' charts. Draws and collects blood samples from patients and prepares specimens for laboratory analysis. Prepares treatment rooms for examination of patients.
Job Requirements Education- High School Diploma — required
- Graduate of a Medical Assisting Program — preferred
- 1 year of Medical Assistant experience — required
- Front Desk experience — preferred
- Basic Life Support (BLS) — required at time of hire
- Must be obtained through the American Red Cross (ARC) or American Heart Association (AHA).
One of the following certifications is required for candidates with less than three years of Medical Assistant experience:
- CCMA – Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (NHA – National Health career Association)
- CMA – Certified Medical Assistant (AAMA – American Association of Medical Assistants OR CHP
- Certified Health Professionals) - RMA – Registered Medical Assistant (AMT – American Medical Technologists OR AAH
- American Allied Health OR ARMA
- American Registry of Medical Assistants) - NCMA – National Certified Medical Assistant (NCCT – National Center for Competency Testing)
- NRCMA – Nationally Registered Certified Medical Assistant (NAHP – National Association for Health Professionals)
Certification Alternatives
In lieu of an approved MA certification, candidates may qualify with the following:
- 3+ years of Medical Assistant work experience AND
- 1+ year of experience in a Hospital, Emergency Room, or Urgent Care setting
Note:
Candidates hired without an approved MA certification must obtain one within 6 months of their start date to remain eligible for continued employment as a Certified Medical Assistant.
Alternative Credentials (accepted at time of hire)
- Graduate of an Accredited School of Nursing, LPN, or RN
- EMT – Emergency Medical Technician (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians)
- Paramedic (National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians)
- CNA – Certified Nursing Assistant
- CPOE (Computerized Provider Order Entry) certification — must be obtained within two weeks of start date.
- Conduct patient registration, including securing required paperwork and insurance documentation, verification of insurance and patient eligibility.
- Process co-pays and schedule patient appointments for the assigned center.
- Coordinate provider referrals to the assigned Specialist.
- Answer patient questions regarding their care and keep them informed of their status.
- Inform technical staff of patient flow.
- Prepare patients for examination, including interviewing to verify patient information and medical history; confirm purpose of visit.
- Perform preliminary physical tests (blood pressure, weight, temperature, etc.) for vital signs and escalate critical cases to the provider as needed.
- Conduct point-of-care testing as needed (e.g., flu, strep, urinalysis, ECG, HCG) and provide patient information to the provider.
