Exciting opportunity for a Permitting Biologist to join Cramer Fish Sciences in West Sacramento, CA!
The Permitting Biologist plays a key role in advancing habitat restoration and monitoring projects by supporting the preparation of biological assessments, environmental compliance documents and regulatory permit applications. This position combines technical writing, data analysis, and collaborative project support to help deliver high-quality, science-driven outcomes for clients and regulatory agencies. The role works closely with Project Managers, field staff, and agency partners to ensure projects are in compliance with regulations, well-documented and executed efficiently.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES- Draft biological assessments and environmental compliance documents, including CEQA and NEPA materials
- Acquire, track, and manage state and federal permits for restoration and monitoring projects
- Conduct technical writing and analysis of project data; summarize, visualize, and present findings
- Develop annual and periodic project reports by following outlines provided by Project Managers, including graphs, tables, and data summaries
- Train and support construction monitors on permit requirements and monitoring protocols to ensure all data is collected thoroughly and efficiently
- Maintain professional relationships with clients and regulatory agencies; attend meetings and distribute project updates
- Attend and present at professional meetings as needed
- Maintain familiarity with relevant scientific and regulatory guidance through research and training
- Participate in occasional field data collection to support project needs
- Perform other duties as assigned in support of project and organizational goals
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field and 2+ years of relevant professional experience, or
- Master's degree in Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field and 1+ year of relevant professional experience
- Experience working with state and federal permitting agencies
- Demonstrated experience producing environmental documents, technical reports, or regulatory deliverables
- Experience supporting habitat restoration, monitoring, or environmental compliance projects
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
- Proficiency with GIS software (ArcGIS and/or QGIS)
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to diverse audiences
- Experience preparing or contributing to CEQA/NEPA documentation
- Experience with fisheries, wildlife, or aquatic ecosystem studies (e.g., stream ecology, fisheries biology, limnology)
- Familiarity with QGIS or ArcGIS to produce maps and conduct basic spatial analysis
- This position is primarily office-based with regular computer and desk work, including prolonged periods of reading, writing, and data analysis
- Occasional fieldwork may be required, which can include: working outdoors in variable weather conditions (heat, cold, rain, wind)
- Walking on uneven or slippery terrain near rivers, streams, or restoration sites
- Standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting light to moderate equipment (up to approximately 25 pounds)
- Must be able to safely work in and around aquatic environments and follow established safety protocols
$30.00 to $36.00/hour. Final compensation at Cramer Fish Sciences (CFS) is determined based on internal equity, relevant qualifications and experience and market considerations.
