The Department of General Services (DGS), Office of Legal Services (OLS), is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Attorney III to join our legal team. This is an excellent opportunity for a seasoned attorney who thrives in a dynamic environment and is committed to supporting statewide programs and initiatives that serve California’s government operations.
About the Role
The Attorney III serves as a senior-level attorney providing expert legal advice, analysis, and representation on complex and sensitive matters. This position works independently and collaboratively with program leaders, executive management, and external stakeholders to support DGS’s broad portfolio, which includes procurement, real estate, sustainability, construction, administrative law, and statewide policy implementation.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide legal counsel on a wide range of issues, including contracts, procurement, public works, administrative law, and regulatory compliance.
- Draft, review, and negotiate complex contracts, agreements, and legal documents.
- Represent the department in administrative hearings, negotiations, and other legal proceedings.
- Conduct legal research and prepare formal opinions, memoranda, and guidance for internal and external stakeholders.
- Advise executive leadership on high‑impact legal and policy matters.
- Collaborate with program staff to ensure compliance with state and federal laws, regulations, and policies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Active membership in good standing with the State Bar of California.
- Demonstrated experience handling complex legal matters with minimal supervision.
- Strong analytical, research, and writing skills.
- Ability to communicate effectively with diverse audiences, including executives, program staff, and external partners.
- Experience in public sector law, procurement, contracts, administrative hearings, or related areas is highly desirable.
