Overview
Job Summary The Nurse Extern at North Mississippi Health Services is responsible for providing age-appropriate patient care, observing safety measures, and communicating effectively with patients, families, and hospital personnel. The role requires adherence to externship program guidelines, competent use of the medical information system, and completing written assignments in a timely manner. The Nurse Extern should possess good oral and written communication skills and may perform skills under directions of preceptor.
Responsibilities- Performs personal care and comfort in accordance with policy and procedure and as documented on their official clinical skills checklist. Performance of skills is directed by a preceptor, nurse manager, instructor, nurse educator or those in a nursing supervisory position.
- Demonstrates knowledge and skills necessary to provide age appropriate care.
- Recognizes abnormalities and/or changes in patients condition and reports to the nurse immediately.
- Assumes additional duties within official clinical skills checklists as assigned
- Observes safety measures to protect the patient from harm. Documentation:
- Successfully completes electronic medical records computer training required of a nurse extern. The extern documents in the patient's records their observations. Requirements:
- Strictly adheres to the guidelines of the externship program as established by the Education/Service Liaison Committee of the Society of Nursing Service Directors of the Mississippi Hospital Association and the Mississippi Council of Deans and Directors.
- Performs within the Mississippi Student Externship Guidelines, NMHS Guidelines, and the official clinical skills checklist
- May not perform in a supervisory role
- May only perform in an observing role, if there is no registered nurse on the unit
- Provision of an orientation program
- Completes written assignment handouts in a timely manner
- Performs within the official skills checklist under possible penalty of delay or inability to write licensure exam
- Accurately documents time worked in the nurse extern role under possible penalty of removal from extern program
- Performs under the direction of a registered nurse who has at least one-year clinical experience
- Performs skills as deemed competent only on the unit to which assigned
- Completion of an evaluation at the end of the extern program
Education
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent . Required

- Works with all levels of hospital personnel to create good rapport within nursing, ancillary departments, and affiliates.
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Competent use of the medical information system
- Demonstrates effective communication skills within a group and individually
- Exhibits a caring manner toward the patient, family member, or significant others.
- Continuously interacts with patients, families, significant others, nursing service, and ancillary departments
