Description
The Utilities Technician is responsible for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and repair of all utility systems that support food manufacturing operations. This includes ammonia refrigeration, steam boilers, compressed air, water treatment, and other facility support systems. The Technician ensures compliance with regulatory requirements, safety protocols, and company policies while minimizing downtime and supporting continuous plant operations.
This position would also be responsible for the PSM program, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations, industry best practices and company safety standards. They would serve as the primary point of contact for ammonia system safety, documentation, audits and continuous improvement efforts.
ScheduleMonday - Friday | 7am - 3:30pm | Every other Saturday until Noon and on-call that weekend.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Operate, monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain ammonia refrigeration systems (compressors, condensers, evaporators, controls).
- Operate, maintain, and repair steam boilers, condensate systems, and related controls.
- Install, maintain, and repair water treatment equipment and distribution systems.
- Perform routine inspections, preventative and predictive maintenance on refrigeration, boiler and associated equipment (piping systems, burners, HVAC units), according to established schedules.
- Perform routine rounds and readings of system pressures, temperatures, and other parameters.
- Maintain water treatment programs for boilers, cooling towers, and other systems to ensure optimal efficiency and regulatory compliance.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of inspections, maintenance, and repairs.
- Respond promptly to alarms, equipment malfunctions, and utility system emergencies to minimize downtime and maintain product quality.
- Safely handle and monitor ammonia systems in compliance with PSM/RMP standards and OSHA regulations.
- Conduct regular tests on water samples to monitor parameters such as pH, turbidity, and chemical levels to ensure compliance with local, state and federal regulations.
- Work collaboratively with production, sanitation, maintenance, and quality teams to ensure food safety and product integrity.
- Assist in regulatory inspections, audits, and required testing (e.g., pressure vessel inspections).
- Support regulatory compliance efforts, including OSHA, EPA, and local authorities.
- Support continuous improvement by recommending and implementing system upgrades or energy‑saving measures.
- Assist in utility infrastructure upgrades and project work as needed.
- Educate the plant on water conservation practices and the importance of protecting water resources.
- Coordinate and maintain elements of the Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Program (RMP) applicable to the facility’s ammonia refrigeration system.
- Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date PSM‑related documentation.
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with customer organizations.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards and safety regulations.
- Follow all safety procedures, including Lockout/Tagout, confined space entry, and PPE requirements.
- Participate in on‑call rotations and respond to after‑hours emergencies as needed.
- Backfill to other positions as needed.
- Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
