Overview
The Legal Aid Society of Palm Beach County is a nonprofit charitable law firm dedicated to ensuring equal access to the justice system for the low-income, disadvantaged and traditionally underserved residents of Palm Beach County.
Legal Aid's Veterans Advocacy Project promotes the financial stability and long-term self-sufficiency of veterans in Palm Beach County by providing high quality civil legal consultation, education and representation to ensure their proper transition from military service and continued stability as a civilian.
JOB SUMMARYRepresents veterans in cases involving divorce, time sharing and parenting, child support and child support modifications, guardianship, and some housing and eviction matters. Position requires daily contact with pro se litigants, supervising attorney, fellow unit attorneys and paralegals and frequent daily contact with the Executive Director and other staff members
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Represents clients before judicial tribunals in a full range of family law matters.
- Conduct interviews of clients at the office or elsewhere.
- Investigates and develops cases, including conducting necessary interviews and consulting appropriate agencies and resources.
- Counsel and advises clients in legal matters.
- Negotiates on behalf of clients.
- Drafts letters, memos, pleadings, briefs, and other legal documents and written materials.
- Develop specialized skills and knowledge in at least one (1) area of law handled by the Legal Aid Society.
- Remains current on new developments in the law which affect Legal Aid clients and Veterans.
- Performs legal research.
- Maintains accurate and complete records and files regarding cases.
- Makes referrals and follows up referrals of clients to appropriate alternative or additional sources of assistance.
- Conducts full financial discovery on client’s behalf.
- Develops and maintains relationships with the Palm Beach County Bar Association.
- Assists in the development and execution of community education projects and activities.
- Serves on community, bar, and county committees where feasible.
- Attend staff and other meetings in the community as assigned.
- Develops and maintains relationships with social service agencies.
- Provides community training on areas impacting veterans and caregivers
- Maintains confidentiality of all information handled.
- Comply with all agency policies and procedures.
- Works with other staff members to form a positive, supportive team atmosphere.
- Must work the days and hours to perform all assigned responsibilities and tasks and be punctual and timely in meeting all performance requirements, including but not limited to, attendance standards and work deadlines.
- Must maintain courteous, professional and effective working relationships with employees and clients of the organization.
- Assists the Executive Director and/or supervisor with special projects, assignments and any additional duties as deemed appropriate or as needed.
- Doctor of Jurisprudence (J.D.) from A.B.A. accredited law school.
- Spanish speaking preferred, but not mandatory.
- Member of the Florida Bar or pending.
- One or more years of legal experience, or clinical experience.
- Excellent verbal and written skills.
- Knowledge of the Florida Family Law Rules of Procedure.
- Dependability, initiative, motivation, and concern for interests of clients.
- Strong, positive interpersonal skills.
- Good judgment and organization.
- Commitment to remain in position for at least two (2) years.
- Ability to work independently and responsibly.
- High ethical standards.
SALARY: Salary range depending on experience. Full benefits package in addition to salary includes:
- Vacation leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment) and increases to 3 weeks a year after two years of employment.
- Sick leave earnings equal 2.4 weeks a year (beginning the first of the month after 30 days of employment).
- 13-15 paid holidays per year (depending on court schedule).
